First buck killed on my own land! - 11/08/21 07:25 PM
Earlier this year I fulfilled a life-long dream and purchased my first property, in Kimble Co. near Cleo, TX. It's adjacent to my good friend's ranch (bonus) and while I've hunted close to it before, I'd never hunted it until Saturday's rifle season opener. I watched a mainframe 8 with a crab-claw on one side for a while and debated shooting it, but I really couldn't decide if he was 3.5 or 4.5 and so decided to pass on it. The hunting gods must have liked my decision because he suddenly got a little skittish and in comes another buck. This one was definitely 4.5, with a tall narrow basket that is pretty common in the local genetics. I waited for the right opportunity, took my shot with the trusty .270, and he dropped. As I was walking towards him, another BIGGER mature mainframe 8 walked out of the tree line, spotted me, and retreated back to the draw. I'll be looking for him next!
I'm still grinning, all the hard work paid off and this is only the beginning! He is my heaviest hill country buck (190 lbs.) and I have the tenderloins dry-rubbed and ready to go on the grill tonight to celebrate a successful hunt with my wife and kids.
Also, after I shared his pictures with friends and neighbors, one of them shared this shot of him that he got on one of his game cams earlier this season.
Good luck to all my fellow hunters, fingers crossed for you!
