Las Vegas

Las Vegas - 09/23/21 02:32 PM

Here’s a different side of Vegas for ya. I flew into LV a couple of weeks ago for a river trip down the Black Canyon of the Colorado River south of the Hoover Dam. We spent three days and two nights in the Mojave Desert drinking beers, chasing shade, and pondering life. It’s wild to think how life was out here before man tamed this stretch of the river. The 52° water is truly the lifeblood of that ecosystem. Here are some pictures.

Beautiful.

Did you do any fishing? Looks prime for that.

I thought this was gonna be about the stock market.
Great pics and certainly a different perception of LV.

I did not, mostly because I didn’t want to mess with out of state licensing down a stretch of the river that borders Nevada and Arizona.

I was pretty surprised by how little wildlife we saw, at least in terms of quantity. One giant trout, one small minnow, one crawfish, one scorpion, one lizard, one giant water bird, one bald Eagle, two bighorn sheep, and a handful of diver ducks. Our camp got raided by critters each night looking for freebies (skunks, mice, and who knows what else).

Insects were out in force, though. Lots of flies, gnats, ants, bees, etc…

Only ~14 river miles to Willow Beach. The upriver winds below that point can apparently make paddling downstream pretty miserable.

There are a lot of cool little beaches, hot springs, campsites, and slot canyons worth checking out along the first few miles right below the dam. We spent most of our time days 1 & 2 poking around that area.

When I read the subject line I pretty much dismissed this thread thinking pictures of Vegas which is still narrow minded because they could have been way cool too.

Glad I finally looked at this thread because it is way cool and had to be a great trip. I bet after several beers and maybe a left handed cig the thoughts of way back when here and BS that came out after got deep in a cool way cheers
