Deer and Worms

Question: Can you give deer worm meds? There is a pelleted type of worm meds, that can be given to sheep and goats, mixed in their feeds. Would it work on deer, as most are, or have protein feeds and corns out for deer. This would get mixed into the feed as well. Would it help them out?

Yes you can, it has a withdrawal time so be aware of that. You can buy pelletized wormers from L&E or Purina for sure. I am sure there are other regional mills that make the wormer pellet...most will be label as exotic wormer. If you are not doing many deer, then you can take either injectable wormer or pour-on wormer and spray or coat corn with it. Let it dry then feed it right before dark in the feeder or pen locations. I have used wormer on pasture whitetails since the early 90's. The cheapest way to see if you need to worm is collecting fresh deer droppings from around your feeders at daylight. Then take them to your Vet to let them check the samples for internal parasites. He will tell you if you need to worm or not. This test is way cheaper than worming them if they do not need it. If you have 5 pens then collect as many fecal samples from as many fresh "piles" as you can find. Fresh from that morning or within a few hours old max. Then mix them all together in a baggy and take one sample bag to the Vet. You can do one baggy per feeder if the Vet is not charging much per sample. That way you now which feeder(s) need worming,
