Jackrabbit is something I had not seen in a while when I living down in South Texas. This one surprised me when I saw him in an area I would not have thought up in the Hill Country. I was surprise to see one in some thicker cover and not as open as I would have expected a jackrabbit to be in.

Wow
Fantastic pics stxrm!

I would guess that is a pretty good indication the predators are under control pretty well at your new place.

Honestly, I think they are really neat.
As a kid we had plenty of them around our home farm in Eastern Bexar county. I've not more than a handful of them in our area now in the last 30 years.
Kinda like horned toads. I honestly have not seen one on our place yet and we used to have them by the dozens when I was a kid.

Last time I drove through west TX on my way to NM at night there was hundreds along the roadside. As a kid I saw one one time in Freestone Co., that was about 40 years ago. My dog gave chase. It was like watching that dog in slow motion the jack was so fast.

Sure don't see them like you used to. I think they are an iconic part of Texas.

Re: Liebre - 07/26/21 07:06 PM

I have quite a few in mountain home. I have one I see at a feeder every trip and he/she has found a mate.

I leave them alone now that I’m an adult, but shot a bunch as a kid

We have a few here around Mason, but not nearly as many as we used to. I give 'em a pass unless they get in my garden, then I use a sling shot to scare away. Took a pic of this guy while he was chomping on a weed.

Those are great pics. We have Jack's up by the hwy where there's red dirt. Been there ever since we bought the place. All the rabbits up in the hills are cottontail. Strange.

We had them in pretty good numbers in Live Oak county when I was growing up way back in the 60's. Thru the years they have disappeared from the landscape. I never seen any on or close to my place in Goliad County. Even on the mule deer lease in Trans Pecos we had a few at first, now I can not remember the last time I saw one. Even had a few in Kendall County back in the early 90's but slowly they disappeared from the whole ranch.

Thanks everyone cheers

We see them often around Kerrville, but don’t last long with a 22 magnum

The more open and flatter areas in the Hill Country still have lots of them. This place is more hilly to rougher country that I saw this one in. It is very thick habitat compared to where I normally see jackrabbits. There are flat areas of pasture land and fields not more than 1.5-2 miles from this area that I have not seen a jackrabbit in yet. This place is about 40-45 miles north of Kerrville.

I will tell this as a true story , I don't care if anyone believes me or not. smile circa 1972 , I was in college at WTSU in Canyon. ( part of the A&M system now)
I had access to hunt a small pasture that had dozens of Jackrabbits, One afternoon, I spied one at about 150 yards looking right at me, I fired, thought I missed , I put another round in the chamber, and watched thru the scope as the animal wobbled , then fell over. I walked to the spot , rabbit was dead but intact.
I found where the round cut thru hair high on the shoulder, but did not break the skin, Maybe scared him to death , maybe just his time to die, or can a
sonic boom be fatal to a hare at that distance ?

Great pics of the Jack.... Used to be a bunch around my grandparents place near Comanche.... they kind of went away for awhile, but they've been seeing some more recently.
