Better late than never

Better late than never - 01/06/21 03:34 AM

Finally got a buck this year. Due to covid we have been blessed to both be able to work from home , my wife and I , and stay on my grandfathers place outside Gatesville. Due to that I've hunted almost every day and loved it. I'd been after a big 10 I saw the first weekend but have never seen since on cam or in person. Finally saw this guy this afternoon and thought he would be a good one to take. Was an older deer from what I think. I'd never seen him either which is surprising too. Shows they can hide out pretty well.
Was able to use my grandfathers 30-06 which we hunted with together since the mid 70's until he died in 2017 and clean him with my Dads knife who died in 2019. So all in all it was a cool day and brought back good memories. Not the biggest but I'm proud.

Great buck up Very cool you got to use your grandfather's rifle and dad's knife. Those memories hang on.

Love the deer in the back of the SUV, that’s awesome!

Congrats on the nice buck!

That’s what hunting is all about. Recalling the memories and using the tools of those who taught us. I always carry one of my dad’s knives to the lease.

Nice buck and great memories. If the back of the SUV looks like your pants your going to be in trouble!

I'm lucky it didn't get in the back of the suv. I didn't get in to much trouble. I miss my truck lol

Re: Better late than never - 01/06/21 07:08 PM

The gun was a Sako 30.06 he bought according to their website between 1969-70. So same age as me. I had thought about upgrading the scope to something newer and better but don't know if I will. The old one still works well even if it is not even close to the newest technology.
My grown son doesn't hunt much so using the old stuff at least reminds me of hunting with them since they are both gone now. Hunting without family or friends takes a lot of the fun out of it.

That's so cool to do what you did with loved ones equipment, cherish the memory , congrats

That 3x9 Redfield was a pretty big deal back in those days, as was the Sako.
