Saw my first Axis

Saw my first Axis - 12/14/20 05:52 PM

I know most people probably have seen them now but I hadnt been lucky enough to see one live ever. Got to hunt at a friends ranch near Evant yesterday and saw one on their place. Even though it was cold and super windy I saw about 35 deer and some good bucks. None on the "hit" list but we all decided( privately even lol) to make a business decision and not shoot one because it was so damn cold lol. Maybe next trip we will. Just proves it doesnt take shooting something to make for a great hunt. What a blast seeing an axis and a lot of nice deer.

Good to see axis in that area, hope they move on over to Gatesville next.

There's a few around. If the Bubba's will lay off the trigger, in a few years there should be a huntable population.

Very fortunate, never been on a lease that had them.

If he has, it's because his gut still hurts from the previous one

You should have shot it. You may never see it again or any others.

I'm about to the point I enjoy hunting with a camera more than hunting with a gun or a bow.

I always enjoy your photos, makes me really want to get a decent camera and start shooting wildlife.

They knew some were on there actually. It's a high fenced place around 1000 acres that had some
On it when they got it. Not a lot of them on there from what he said. I was just excited to see one finally. I've never hunted anywhere with them so seeing one was great with me. He wouldn't have minded if I shot one but I was in no hurry. Just enjoyed a great hunt.

I had a big one jump over the hood of my truck on FM573 outside of Mullin just across Pecan Bayou. He was so close I could see his family jewels as he passed by. lol

Low fence?? We have a place in San Saba and have dreamed of this for years.

I'm afraid if I saw that the business decision would go out the window.

Yup, that one would have had a ride in the truck bed. Lived in New Braunfels for four years, and would see axis around quite a bit. I have a space on my wall reserved for a 30+ incher. And great table fare as well. I prefer it to any other wild game I’ve tried (although Nilgai is on my to-do list).

I couldn't have passed that up I'd pass up whitetail to shoot axis any day.

Re: Saw my first Axis - 12/15/20 08:38 PM

So did you have the green light on the axis though, minus the business decision it was to cold to mess with an animal?
