Females have more black and white bands on the tail. It’s been awhile, but I believe males have 3-4 and females have 5-6. Something like that.
Actually, it's probably a male. Males are bigger than females and have longer tails. He was a big one, pics didn't do him justice but that's as close as the wife would get.

I’ve never heard that regarding sex but have between species. Western diamondbacks have 5-7 bands on their tail whereas southern pacific rattlesnakes only have 3-4....
Westerners have more of a “bad” attitude, but the venom of the southern pacific is a nastier cocktail.....

I was wrong, after a little digging it’s the Mojave and not the southern pacific I was thinking of....I don’t have my snake book with me.
Big ole snake. Glad you relocated it. I caught and relocated 4 this year. 3 from my fenced backyard. 1 from my front yard. But they were all little guys. Accidentally ran over another one with the lawnmower.
