New Mexico cow elk hunt

Didn't get drawn in Arizona this year, so resorted to plan B which was a landowner tag in New Mexico.
They tried to elude me with the weather moving in, but was fortunate enough to connect before the bad stuff moved in. Thankful for the harvest, and a VERY full freezer!

Saw one bull saturday afternoon while sitting on a ridge, then mid morning sunday after not seeing anything decided move about a 1/4 mile down to check another canyon, after about 20 minutes 6 elk showed up out of nowhere and were feeding directly towards me. Ended up being around 175 yard shot with 20-25mph crosswind Used Remington 700 .300win mag, Federal 180gr trophy bonded tip (talk about a THUD when it connected) took about 2 steps and piled up.

What area of NM?

Magdalena, about 100 miles south of Albuquerque.

Wenched it up into the back of an old 4 runner, ranks on up there with some of my best redneck ingenuity.

That’s a pretty remote area. Didn’t know they had elk there.

It is. Magdalena isn’t far from the Gila units.
