Life in the north - 10/25/20 06:46 PM

Now I'd like to share some photos of things people do up here, and happenings in general.

My BIL fishing for Pike on Great Slave Lake. The time is 11:50 pm, it's early in June.

A small Pike I caught in the Peace River a few miles from home.

There are some big ones out there. My kid brother with a nice Pike.

The end of my day of Goose Hunting. Hunting is a popular activity here.
[Linked Image]

Road repairs, I did this for 14 years. No shortage of work on that job.
[Linked Image]

Rodeos are also popular.

And this is why. Forest fire several miles from my home.

Not yet. We've had a couple of light flurries this week but it's all gone now. We seldom have snow that lasts before the end of October.
We are also a low precipitation zone. We get about 10 inches of rain total over a normal summer and only about three feet of snow over a normal winter.

I'm told that this area would be a desert if it had the evaporation rate that places south of us have. We have very tight soils and a low evaporation rate which combined mean we need far less rain and snow then places in the south.

The crop is Canola, formerly called Rape Seed. It is a First cousin to Mustard.
It's an oil seed crop. They make cooking oil from it.

Most if not all the fields you saw around Calgary would have been Canola as well. As far as I know very little Mustard is grown in Alberta but Canola is a popular crop.

Yes, well very close to it. The first photo was taken on a lake 8 hours north of us though. We do get a few hours of dark on the longest day of the year.
Some call this the land of the midnight twilight.

Some more photos of life around here.
A couple of popular hobbies

Berry picking. Apples and such won't grow up here so many pick wild Berries which are so abundant in many places. And free.
[Linked Image]

Horses and all that comes with them are also popular with many folk here.
[Linked Image]

We are the northern extreme of were farming is possible. All the developed areas are farming areas but much of the land is still wild forested public land with some logging and oilfield activity throughout.
[Linked Image]

The end of the farming season.
[Linked Image]

The end of a day farming.
[Linked Image]

And then comes winter with it's short days and cold. -40 is not uncommon here. it can get that cold or colder from mid November through to early April but the average temperatures runs around -10 through the winter.
[Linked Image]

When the winter snows melt in spring local flooding can become and issue, but it dries up quickly
[Linked Image]

The warm weather brings with it all the birds that migrated down to you folks for the winter. And of course it also brings out the baby animals.
