You've saw one? Two in the yard yesterday, I see them here and on the ranch fairly regularly. I saw more horn toads than rattlesnakes this year, which is odd.
That's a good size one. Been seeing them often in Baylor county, saw a full grown one and two babies the size of a quarter the other weekend. Also have seen two of the box turtles I remember seeing as a kid, those I don't see much anymore. Sure glad to see them around, used to play with them when we went camping as a kid in the Hill Country and around San Antonio.
I haven't seen a Horned Toad in many, MANY years. It's probably been 30+ years. We used to have a ton of them on my grandmother's farm east of San Antonio just off of IH10. I think as soon as the fire ants moved in on us it did them in.
I've read that they love to eat red ants though and I cannot figure out why we don't have a few out at my place in St. Hedwig as I have bushels full of them and poison them frequently in my coastal fields just to try and keep them somewhat under control.
Sure wish we had some because they are really cool.
