Got off my @%# and did some work - Spring Bear 2020

Got off my @%# and did some work - Spring Bear 2020 - 05/03/20 08:39 PM

Friday afternoon i re-inflated the zodiac and got the motor(s) out of storage and mounted:

Took it for an hour long test run on our lake to put it through its paces and to make sure all was good before taking it too far into the backcountry. This is coming back in at the end of the test run. The lonely light in the middle of the frame on shore is our place.

Got into the back lake on Saturday. Road was in decent shape other than the odd section flooded to as much as 12 inches deep. At each flooded section I stopped before proceeding to walk the flooded area to ensure no unseen surprises:

Got the boat in the water. The lake level is about 6 inches higher than the outlet of the launch turning it into a small river flowing out of the lake:

Underway:

Arrived - Site is about 5 km (3 miles) from the launch and 100 yards into the bush. I started it last fall and took an average size boar out during the fall hunt:

On the way back out:

I forgot to take pics of the hide, shooting lane and bait as it was raining and i was focused on getting out. Bait recipe is as follows:

180 lbs whole corn
90 lbs oats
20 lbs yellow marshmellow bananas
30 lbs chocolate sauce
20 lbs small candy coated chocolate balls

The above fills one 55 gallon drum completely. Also sprinkled anise extract, carmel extract, and vanilla extract on 3 stumps in the area to get things started.

I will take pics of bait/hide set up next time i go in.

I am curious on how you mix all of that inside of the barrel??? Or do you just pour it it and let it seep through the grains?

Some of each ingredient get added in a lift. Takes 12 lifts to fill the barrel. Barrel is on a 6 foot chain lead fastened to a tree and has 3 evenly spaced 1.25 inch holes in the bottom. First bear on the scene will knock it over and roll it all over and mix things up. It is sort like a giant salt shaker. Makes them stay longer to get the food and having to roll it around makes the bear change positions a bunch of times so that sooner or later he exposes his vitals.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Sounds similar to what we call hog pipe feeders. Piece of 6" PVC pipe filled with corn with holes drilled in it. .

Hirogen,
always enjoy your posts...please keep them coming.

I'm curious what you think about the assault rifle ban recently announced for Canada. willing to share your perspective?

Total BS. The drama teacher leading our country is an idiot. Will make zero difference to public safety. He should have focused resources on criminals as opposed to law abiding gun owners.

I myself am unaffected as i don't own anything on the list as i love my bolt actions and shotgun wise my O/Us but regardless it is a step in the wrong direction.

Every time I see your posts I'm ashamed that all I do is back up my truck, drop the tailgate and fill feeders.... You certainly put in the work and the scenery is fantastic.

Love your pics as always.

...out of curiosity....do those other boats belong to neighbors or an outfitter?
