The greatest hunt in North America; beautiful predator in beautiful country. Will be up there in a week and a half.

It really is. Seeing the dogs work is unlike anything one can imagine.

Jerry Huffaker (Huftax on the forum) has the cat now. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.

It will no doubt be the draw in any room you have it. up

Have a friend that took one in Montana, said it was the hardest hunt keeping up in deep snow, but one of his most memorable hunts.

When I lived on the western slope, knew a few outfitters that brought in some nice cats, every time was like seeing a cat for the 1st time, amazing animal.

We had a foot of snow the night before. And yes, going straight up hill in that kind of snow isn’t easy. Every step is a roll of the dice on if you are going to end up on your face or back in the snow lol. It was -4 and I’ve never been that cold in my life. Amazing how quick the dogs can work in that environment.

Did you eat it? Friend of mine killed a lion in Idaho a few weeks ago and brought some back strap to the lease, it was surprisingly good. White meat like pork, kind of sweet and tender.

I’d describe it the same way, just like pork.

Re: Colorado kitty - 01/02/20 08:51 PM

The snow is beautiful but I prefer hunting dry ground as my hounds are accustomed to it and MUCH easier for me to get around. Two years ago, we were hunting in the Navajo Rez and we had to dig out of the snow 12 times in one day...absolutely miserable. Another reason that I enjoy hunting the dry ground is that no one else is hunting. My favorite saying, "When it snows, everybody has lion dogs".

Re: Colorado kitty - 01/03/20 12:53 AM

I went on 2 hunts in Idaho. I was young and had no idea how to research an outfitter and just kinda picked one based off price. It was beautiful scenery, but being a hounds man from back East and having raised hounds all my life, I can tell you the guy was no regular hunter and his dogs were terrible.

The only reason I went back was because it was supposed to be “free” but he ended up charging me a good bit for the second trip.

Either way, I’ve always dreamed of going with someone who had descent dogs. I love hunting with dogs, experiencing new country, and befriending new folks.

Congrats on a beautiful trophy and memories of a lifetime.

Watching and listening to the hounds work as a team is something that every hunter should have the opportunity to experience. Hunting lions is very similar to bass fishing, you hunt the structure...
