What did he weigh.....

What did he weigh..... - 11/25/19 03:01 AM

I normally do not shoot bobcats unless I am seeing one often around my feeders and they are spooking the deer. I have been seeing one or two every time I hunted this one feeder, which was every morning and evening. Was also getting them on trail cams fairly regularly also inside the feed pens. Late one evening two days ago I was had not seen any deer when this bobcat showed up around 5:20 or so on a very dark overcast afternoon. I seen him sneak across a road like he normally did but lost him in the broomweeds and low brush. I had forgotten about him when a buck came in around 5:45. The buck was spooky and then this bobcat made a rush at him. The buck whirled and hauled azz away running and blowing as he left. I shot this bobcat and weighed him. Take a guess on the weight and I will post a weight tomorrow. That is my .22 mag for reference I shot him with at 70 yards or so.

Haha...that's a good one.

Bobcats (unless an old, thick bodied Tom) will surprise you in weight. The are long of body and often give the impression of weighing more than they do.

For reference the 'Bob' pictured below was a mature Tom (but not thick), healthy, and weighed 26 lbs.

Re: What did he weigh..... - 11/26/19 01:11 AM

I think the vast majority of folks that take bobcats simply hoist them and 'guess' at their weight. Many...would be surprised when a cat is put on actual scales (even fairly inaccurate digital fish scales) that they just don't weigh what they look like. Old, fat Toms will sometimes exceed 35 lbs. but an honest to goodness 30 lb. Bobcat is a big cat anywhere in the State of Texas and they LOOK every bit of it.

@stxranchman is an experienced rancher/outdoorsman and I trust whatever weight he says the cat is, but those guessing 40+ pounds I think don't understand just how big a bobcat that would have to be (in Texas). I've trapped and shot a boatload of them in 50 years of hunting and been around other folks doing the same and am still waiting to see a real (put on scales) 40 pounder. Not saying they aren't out there...but they are few and far between.

Re: What did he weigh..... - 11/26/19 02:33 AM

Ive never shot a bobcat so mine was just a wild guess comparing it to the size of my blue heeler. They sure must look a lot heavier than they are then.

They are LONG and even fairly tall in stature when you think about it, BUT they aren't very broad. Look over the top of the bobcat and you'll see the cross section is scarcely 6"-7" on most.

They don't have a robust skeletal make up and don't carry a lot of 'gut' (internal organs). They are built to be athletic....so are mostly, muscle and sinew with a little bone to hold it all together and a pretty hide.

They always look like they should weigh more than they do.

There are some old 'bruiser' Tom's out there. I get videos sometimes of the older ones and they are thick in the forelegs, have filled out hindquarters, a sagging belly and loose, floppy hide right in front of the rear legs at the belly. They walk with a 'swagger' almost waddling at times. But these are older Tom's and there just aren't that many of them out there.

These two were the closest ones to the actual weight(on a digital scale) of 22.2 lbs.

Yep we missed that one Beez lol. My biggest cat was between 28-30 lbs (scale wasn’t super accurate) big Tom killed down South years ago and he was huge! I’ve never seen one bigger and we have lots of cats.
