One of the best parts....

My son is 8, almost 9 if you ask him and has been hunting with me since he was 4. He's learned a lot over the last 4 years. Learned how to stack small sticks like a teepee to start a fire, that med-rare steak cooked over mesquite coals is better than the gas grill at home, how to shoot his Papa's BB gun, then another Papa's 1961 Marlin bolt action .22 and he's gotten pretty dang good with the 10/22 I got him last year. He watches people skin & quarter deer because he knows I'm only doing it once for him then it's his turn. We've had great conversations while on the road to and from, as well as while sitting in the deer stand. He wants to hunt or fish no matter if it's 100* in the shade or 33 and raining (and we've done both).

All those make for great lifelong memories and make me a proud dad, but none are as good as me not having to get the gate! He does it without me asking and he never complains.

First grandson on the way, can't wait for that right there! Just hanging out with him outside!

thats a great post and sums up what its all about. we are at a pretty similar place as im about to head out to shackelford county with my 8.5 year old for 10 straight days at the camp. he's a hyper kid that cant sit still in class, at the dinner table or on the bench at baseball, but he won't move a muscle for 4 straight hours in the deer blind. I'm enjoying it like crazy while I can because I know it won't last forever

My 9 year old asked to get the gate last weekend. She doesn’t know it yet but she will be getting it every time now.

My son will be 9 in February. He and I have a very similar relationship as you and yours. As I read your post I couldn't help but think "If I wrote this post it would sound exactly the same". These are memorable times. Congrats on raising him right.

Enjoy it and make as many memories as you can. My boys and girl are all grown up now so I'm back to opening the gate myself. My grandson isn't quite old enough to get the gate and my granddaughter's attention span is to short. When she jumps out so does the dog and off they go chasing bugs or lizards and I still have to get the gate. Then i have to try to get her and the dog back in the truck. I love'em though.

They sure grow up fast. Enjoy the moments while you got them

Very, very well done. I've had grown-arse men customers that didn't have the concept of getting the dad-gum gate. And when I asked them, they complained. That boy's gonna be just fine.

every single time I open a gate I think of my son who grew up to be a damn fine man who lives a long way off in another state. what I wouldn't give to watch him open that gate agaim.
