Success in Wyoming - Thorofare Elk Hunt - 10/23/19 05:06 AM
I've recently returned from a week in the Wyoming backcountry hunting elk in the Thorofare region with Lynn Madsen of Yellowstone Outfitters. The trip and experience was nothing short of amazing! An abbreviated summary of our hunt is below, or you can read an in depth report on our blog at https://www.redsnake-tactical.com/blogs/news/wyoming-elk-hunt-in-the-thorofare
The Thorofare is located in the Teton Wilderness along the southern boundary of Yellowstone National Park and is said to be the most remote spot in the continental U.S. -- the furthest point from any road in any direction as you can get. It is only reachable via an 8-hour, 30 mile horseback ride.
The region is named after the Thorofare Creek which merges with the Yellowstone River just a mile or two inside the park line and serves as the major migratory path for elk and mule deer moving out of Yellowstone National Park to their wintering grounds in Cody, Wyoming. Consequently, the area is renowned for consistently producing trophy caliber bulls in the 350-400” range. All eight hunters in camp had shot opportunities on bulls over 300”, and a total of six mature elk were eventually taken -- the largest 6x6 bull scoring in the 340 range.
