i guess this is the year of the freak. What say the experts. Will he make 13". Any ideas on what would cause this growth? Could it be an injury in the past? Age?
100% velvet injury this summer. On my place with the really good left side I would let him go another year. I have one like that this year and on the same side.
nope he will get a pass this year. My first thoughts were getting him out of the gene pool because I had never seen anything like this before. thus the question if he would make 13". I would much rather wait until the right side catches up to the left side.

They probably do. Maybe I will get lucky and find his sheds next year.
Questions for the group...What exactly does a velvet injury mean and how does it happen? Is is as simple as he rubbed up against something while it was soft???

Agreed. Needs another year for sure. All the signs of a good buck in the making.
I haven't seen one like this before either. I think you're wise to wait - he could turn into something you wouldn't second guess on. I did stumble on an unusual yearling yesterday. Curious to see how he develops too.
Had one like that with a velvet injury last season. He was only three so we let him go to see if the bad side would come back to normal. I wouldn't call it normal just yet, but he's grown a full beam and some tines this season. I'll try and post up some photos of him tonight.
