Alligators - Brazos Bend State Park

I spent Tuesday morning taking photos at Brazos Bend State Park. I stumbled upon an absolute FEEDING FRENZY of Alligators! I've spent quite a bit of time around gators, and have never experienced anything like this. There were 20-30 mature gators in one small area (no larger than 1 acre in size) all actively feeding on fish. Getting photos of them in action was a little tough, but I managed to get a few good action shots. Also, the big bull gator in the first two photos was truly a monster!! (Conservatively I think he was 14+ ft)

Cool shots. Your 'bull' gator is probably a female in reality. Most gators over 9 or 10 feet are almost always female.

This would only be true if the Males were 'stunted' for some reason (habitat, feeding grounds) since males grow markedly larger than the females.

Yep, that would be a big one. They certainly get that large and just bit larger. I believe the State Record (for a gator bagged) is around 14'-3", but no doubt..live one's exist larger than that.

They can live as long as humans....so plenty of time to grow, whether you subscribe to the idea that they continue to grow throughout their lives or follow 'determinant growth patterns'. I believe the latter is true.

Regardless, what great photos of them in their natural habitat.

Looks like a good swimmin hole.

My family loves that place. It is about 30 minutes from the house so we go when the weather is nice and walk the trails. Coolest thing was one day we happened upon a large gator with a deer in his mouth. Looked like he had just caught it too.

WOW!! I would have killed to be there with my camera when that happened! Very cool.
