BIGGEST CRAPPIE I HAVE EVER SEEN.....AND A FEW MORE! - 06/01/19 10:33 PM
I didn't fish last weekend because of the holiday weekend but I picked up where I left off 2 weeks ago this morning.
I tried to get someone to go with me but 4 people said they didn't like fishing so I went by my self again (they might not have really said that but either way they couldn't make it).
Anyway the boat set sail at 6am this morning and I was after only Crappie today. Couldn't find them really stacked up like they have been the last few weeks but was able to move around enough to scratch out a limit. I think the dead calm water had them a little skittish and they didn't want anything to do with a boat sitting on top of them. I still managed about 75 total but mostly small ones and a few big Sandies in the mix.
I think it was my third fish of the morning I hooked up with the biggest Crappie I have ever seen in my life. I actually thought it was a Bass until it came up. No way I could boat flip her so I dropped down to both knees and was able to lip her just as the hook popped out. Pictures flat don't do this fish justice!!! I have been fishing nearly 40 years and never seen a Crappie like this. She is just a tad shy of 18". That's a 10 pound bag of ice she is laying on so that gives you an idea of her size.
I also saw something pretty rare. I heard some splashing around behind me and thought it was Sandbass schooling. I turned around and could tell it was a pretty good size fish and it just kept thrashing around on the surface. I spun the boat around and could see a giant Bass trying to swallow a very large Crappie but it had gotten hung sideways in its mouth and couldn't spit it out. I put the trolling motor on high and started digging for the net so I could scoop her up and free the Crappie from her gills. Just about the time I was within reach she was either able to spit the Crappie or swallow it I am not sure but she swam away. I got a really good look at her and feel she was 8-10 pounds.
Ended up bringing home a limit of 11"+ Crappie and about 8-10 big Sandbass. No I don't use minners.
