My guess is that rattler ain't very hungry. You could put a Double meat, double cheese Whataburger with grilled onions and grilled jalapenos in front of me, but if I just ate one, I wouldn't touch it.

Ive seen ground squirrels do this with snakes when they have a litter in a hole nearby. Try to get the snakes to chase them away from the litter.
