A first for me. A Canada Goose pair flew in here a couple of months ago. She built a nest and they hatched Saturday. I would never have thought she would keep the nest long enough. But I have been working hard on the predators so maybe that helped. Amazing

Five of them. If I find a turtle has gotten one there will be hell to pay. Turtles better spread the word to leave the little Gooses alone.

Baby geese are goslings.

Re: Little Gooses - 04/08/19 11:00 PM

They are my Gooses. I call them like I want. The first time for me to have any here. It is amazing how protective the pair are of the baby Gooses. I get within a couple hundred yards of them and they go into the hiding mode.

I just put 12 6 inch bass in the tank about 4 months ago. I don't believe they are a problem yet. As mean as the big Gooses are they might whip the bass anyway.

Re: Little Gooses - 04/09/19 04:39 PM

I like the baby gooses. They hatch every year at Highport Marina. It's interesting watching their different stages of growth. I bet there's a hundred every year out there. And the big gooses will get to watching a group of about 20 baby ones. They look like school teachers for gooses, lol. I'm easily entertained too.

That is really neat Don. Thanks for sharing, you have a nice place, living in New Mexico I envy anyone with water on there place. Hopefully she comes back for years to next, and some of her little ones might come back and nest also.

They brought them up from the tank to where I feed a some Transcaspian Urials and a few Ibex to eat left over feed. It is about 200 yards from the tank. Poor little Gooses are getting plenty of exercise.

Re: Little Gooses - 04/11/19 12:27 PM

I am amazed at how the parent Gooses protect and also teach the little Gooses. Yesterday I saw them out behind the big tank eating grass. I was on top of the dam and they were below me in the spillway. The big Gooses laid down flat to hide then the little Gooses saw what they did and did the same.

I have a live trap that I just bait with corn here at the house so I don't catch the cat. I put it out when I saw the goose had a nest. Since then I have caught 14 coons and 2 possums.. Shows how many varmints are running around out there. Also had a turkey hen nest near the tank but the eggs did not hatch. Have not seen any young turkeys this year. Must have been something with the weather. Too hot, cold, wet or dry. Who knows.

They give the Ibex hell if they get too close to them. This has been very interesting. The young ones are getting tamer than the parents.
