Axis antler growth

He lost them about 2 weeks ago. You want to watch again this year?

That didn't take long. How big was he?

Here he was in April of last year. I did not find his antlers this year.

The progressions are very neat to watch, crazy how fast they grow. Appreciate that you share them.

Yes,the only time you can tell it was broke is when he runs. He walks good and it shows no sign of being messed up. He is getting old. At least 7 years old. I think his best years are past. But we shall see.

In for watching his growth again. With Axis if he is 7 or 8 he might still have his best antler years in the future unless having the broke leg messes with his rack. Be interesting to see what he does

Yesterday afternoon

He now has a couple of buddies that have jumped over my so called HF to join him.

It's amazing what less than a week will look like.
Apparently they think the grass is greener on your side of the fence. You might have to thin the herd in a few years it they keep coming.

The part of the new antler you see in the picture are the brow tines. The main antler is behind it.

They always look pissed off.

Yesterday afternoon.I wonder what the white coloration is in the velvet? If he scraped it or grows to fast and splits?

That boy is getting after it, that is some different coloring for sure.

I have seen the white streak/line on the antlers during velvet. My brother had a 33" axis in velvet they had a white streak from base to tip. I say "had" because it was in storage during his move and mice got to it.
I never was able to be close enough to see the swirls when they are just starting to grow. Cool picture

The 2 year old at the top lost his antlers yesterday. We shall see how fast they regrow if he sticks around. They should end up around 24 inches or so.

Actually Roland the younger Axis that is now 3 years old has a much larger body that this one. They are not related so we shall see if his antlers are also going to be larger. That is unless he decides to leave.

We got about a half inch yesterday afternoon and about 3/4 of an inch early this morning. We needed it bad.

Looks like he about to quit growing. The other picture is the spike and 2 year old from last year.

THat buck is looking good this year. Agree he is about through growing forthis year, perhaps a little more on the main beams. The other points are getting sharp and the main beams are getting close to that case. Once the bulbous tine ends starts becoming more of a point the growth is abut over

The Axis that was a spike last year shed his velvet yesterday. He lost his antlers on 2-18-19. He had the shortest time of growing new antlers. The other two that lost their antlers before him are still in velvet. I learned something new.

I never would of gussed any buck could shed and grow back to hard horn in less tham 3 months! I learned something as well Don. Thanks for the info/update sir!

Don how much does a mature Axis doe weigh?

I really don't know. Maybe just a little more than a WT Doe. But just like all animals some are bigger than others. There are a couple of Axis
Does that are with these Bucks. They look about the same size as my WT Does are.

This one weighed 140 lbs. before it was gutted..

He shed most of his velvet today.

After about a week he started polishing up his antlers.

Actually Roland the green is all Praire Cone Flowers or as we call them River Weed. We really haven't gotten that much rain compared to what others have. The tanks haven't caught any water in well over 6 months. Hopefully the coming week we will get some good rain.

I really don't have any choice but he is working on my fences. So I am going to have to get rid of him. $2250 total. PM me if interested.
