Decisions, decisions

Decisions, decisions - 12/03/18 07:52 PM

Was out hunting with my 10 yr old and just before dark this guy walked out at the end of the field, about 320 yards away. I put the rifle up because I could tell he had some decent antlers. My son looked at him through the binoculars. I had decided to pass on him, but had second thoughts as I saw his width when he walked straight away from me. Man, what to do? He's a nice enough buck. In the end, my son said "Dad, you HAVE to shoot him! He's HUGE!"

In the end, he's not the biggest or nicest around or even the biggest seen on our ranch this year, but my son was over the moon that I shot him, and that's all that counts, isn't it?

Inside spread is about 17.5"

That is awesome. I remember when I was younger I talked my dad into shooting a spike. He definitely didn't want to at the time but the same thing you experienced. He saw how excited I got just because a buck walked out and he told me later on that it was awesome for him watching me get excited and that he decided it was time for me to experience the the rest of harvesting a deer.

Honestly, I'm happier with the instant drop on a 320 yard shot than I am with the buck itself. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the deer, but I've always elected to pass on distance out past 200 yards or so. I got a new Nikon scope with better magnification and the BDC reticle, so I picked the 2nd dot and let her rip. He rolled over dead on the spot. Talk about a big increase in confidence.
