Starting to think that this is what has been destroying our feeders. Worked on or replaced 7 feeders since spring, north of Clarksville.

I wonder how they get along with pigs. Do they just leave each other alone for the most part?

Re: Lil bear - 10/01/18 08:41 PM

Awesome, I'm pumped they are making a comeback. Maybe in my lifetime there will be a season for Black Bears in Texas.

And a helluva lot more powerful. Someone should start making bear-proof feeders.

They've been spotted in Red river county. That last pic is a big one, maybe a boar?

Wow. Moving south. Friend of mine has a place in Southeast Oklahoma and they give him fits tearing up feeders.

They're all along the I-20 corridor from a re-stocking by the state of Louisiana in TENSAS parish. There have been confirmed sightings all over the place lately. Red River WMA has a ton of bears and hogs. TX is probably getting some migrating from LA.

Re: Lil bear - 10/02/18 05:31 PM

Gave up on feeding a spot in SW tx because a sow and cubs homesteaded my area. Warden made it VERY clear that I couldn’t harm or harass them in any way. Nothing I tried worked to stop them not feeder cages, varmint proof spinners, nothing.... gave up on the feeder and focused on a small food plot.

This will probably be common place if/when they populate throughout. I hope they hate hogs and run them off. I'll take bears over hogs. I know, high hopes.

What does the law say about black bear in Texas?

Re: Lil bear - 07/10/20 11:12 PM

I’ll take hogs over bears if I had feeders. Just 200# coons

Re: Lil bear - 07/10/20 11:26 PM

They will prey on the piglets and smaller hogs. Will leave the larger hogs alone. They also are pretty fond of fawns. Bears and 100 pound+ timber wolves in packs are some of the reasons hogs have trouble getting established to any degree in our area. A pack of 8 or 10 timber wolves makes short work of even the meanest hog.

I would not expect them to dent your hog population. We have a healthy bear population but they require a large area per animal typically 2+ square miles per animal.

I had a friend who owned 1,000 (one thousand) acres in Red River county... (Northest Texas)

Ten years ago he showed me a pic of a black bear on his trail cam.
