Colorado Vacation

Colorado Vacation - 08/10/18 03:03 PM

Wife and I stayed in a cabin not far from Black Canyon on the Montrose side. Saw Elk, Deer, and Turkey daily from the back deck. We took a boat down the Gunnison river and did some hiking there as well. We went to Santa Fe NM, Creed, Lake City, Montrose, Ouray, Ridgeway, Telluride and into both ends of Black Canyon. We also took a drive down Last Dollar road.

Thanks for the photos. Headed up there next week. Gonna spend Friday night in Sante Fe. Drive to Pagosa Springs the next morning. That will be our base of operations, but we'll probably visit a lot of the same places you did. I worked on a dude ranch outside Durango in the summers of '73-'74. Absolutely love that country. The house we rented sits right on the river just N or PS.

If you're in the Telluride/Ridgeway area check out Last Dollar Road, that was a beautiful drive. It's best to come in from the Ridgeway side then go towards Telluride. It's where they filmed some of the orginal True Grit movie, the Mattie Ross house is on that road, here's a pic of it.

Seeing pictures like that make me question why I'm living in Texas and not in the mountains.

Great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Was happy to get back to the ranch even though it was 100 degrees here. The mountains can be a though place to live in the winter, and I'd rather have a Texas summer than a Colorado winter.

I've had several folks inquire about the cabin. Here's the info on it.

between Creede and Lake City is one of the best burgers in the World...Freemans ranch store... Looks like you were at Clear Creel falls...Sad.. we had a lot growing up on the River next to Antlers guest ranch outside of creede.. Parent bought it in the early 70s as we spent many summers there.. Mid 80s with us all in sports we never got to go there.. They sold it to Antlers late 80.... Would have been worth a gold mine now...
Is that the Gunnison below Blue Mesa.?? We did a guided trip 5 years ago on it.. 240 LONG steps down and up...

Yes, the steps were a little harder than I though, had to rest a couple of times. Boat trip was nice though, it holds 42 people.
