Last Sunday after the morning hunt, frustrated with all the good bucks we had been seeing suddenly becoming ghosts, I decided to switch things up. Very little sign of rutting, but i decided to go put out some doe estrous and buck urine scent wicks on one of my draws, along with corn down the road. We noticed the deer were moving earlier in the evenings, so I walked to the stand around 2:45, climbed in and settled down, and immediately regretted it. Very little wind, and temps in the 70s, half tempted to strip down. About 15 minutes of sweat dripping down my face passed, and I noticed a flutter on the fence line, thought maybe it was a bird. Picked the binocs up and could see a small buck pacing the fence. Knowing what little wind there was, was blowing the scent i put out right towards him, I figured it wouldn't hurt to give a little grunt to see what this guy was all about. Not even a minute passed, and this guy jumped the fence looking for a fight, followed by the little buck. I was surprised it actually worked with the minuscule amount of rut activity i had witnessed. After 20 minutes or so of me shaking the entire stand with him in my cross hairs, i was able to place a high shoulder shot and drop him in his tracks at about 3:20pm. He's my first slick 12, and although only 15.5" wide, I'm tickled pink. I think Shiner was proud of him too.
