Never underestimate a 40 yr old shotgun

Never underestimate a 40 yr old shotgun - 12/02/17 07:48 AM

Been hunting on Ft Hood for quite a while now with my shotgun with rifled barrel. The shotgun is a Remington Wingmaster that my grandpa purchased brand new in the early 70s. I added a rifled barrel to it and began killing hogs on a regular basis. A couple weeks ago i got the ok from Pulsar to run my thermal on my shotgun so I put my thermal on top and went to work. Didn’t find any sounders but got 2 solo boars on the maiden voyage.

Before anyone asks. The reason I’m using shotgun rather than rifle like I normally would is because Ft Hood hunting regulations only allow rifles on guided hunts, in unguided areas you are limited to what they consider limited range weapons. Bows, muzzleloader, or shotgun so I had to improvise.

Well done Sir! I'm guessing the setup worked like a charm......any issues with recoil?

Awesome job! The 870 Wingmaster is what we sell the most of, in the way of shotguns, here at the pawn shop. I like them too.

I’ve shot a coyote at 120 yards that’s the furthest so far. I’m shooting hornady 300 gr SSTs

I LOVE wingmasters. My first gun was a 20 ga. hand me down wingmaster. It amazes me that you can pick up a 20 year old 870 and it pumps smooth as silk yet the new 870's out of the box feel like they have sand in the action on every pump. Nice setup!

Thermal Shotgun strikes again. This was one seriously tough sow. First slug hit her in the shoulder and she went down, I watched her for about a minute and she didn’t move. I began walking towards her and got about 30 ft away and heard a gasping sound and I shined my white light on her. She was still laying on her side so I was just gonna give her a minute or so to expire and then she jumps up and runs right past me. I turned the thermal on squired target and fired but hit her high and it just skimmed her back. I then took off after her, I would run 30 or so yards the. Find her in my thermal but couldn’t get a shot. After doing this a couple times I finally got an opening and hit her again this time by the back hip taking her down. This time I gave her plenty time to die lol. When I inspected her the first shot was slightly high but in the shoulder and I was very surprised she got up from it.

It’s a solid setup for sure just wish I could find a sounder all I’m seeing is solo boars and sows.
