12 yr old out shooting to 800 yards- first time with mil scope- video - 06/30/17 04:49 PM
I took my son out to the range yesterday for the first time this summer. I put a new mil/mil FFP scope on his Tikka T3 Compact rifle, and I wanted to get him trained on mils and dialed in. We confirmed 100 yard zero with his reduced recoil load of 168 Hornady BTHP. We then started shooting plates from 200 yards out to 800 yards to get good dope on the rifle. Once he got dialed in on 800 yards, we stayed on the 800 yard plate for at least 50+ rounds. He wore it out! (see pic below). We ran out of his 100 rounds of reduced recoil load, so he started shooting my full power load with the same bullet running 150 fps faster. He shot about 40-50 rounds of that!
For the last 2 challenges of the day, I made him shoot from 200-500 without dialing the scope and using only hold-overs in the scope. He missed 400 once, but hit the 4 targets in 5 rounds. I asked if he thought he could do it out to 600, and he said "piece of cake, Daddy!" He loaded up 5 rounds in the mag, and I hit the record button. Here's the results.
Here's the 800 yard, 2 moa plate we shot a ton at. The reduced load was arching in so steep, it was hitting the over hanging tree branches, and you could see leaves fall on many rounds. It wouldn't surprise me it some bullets came in side ways.
