I sat for 4 hours yesterday and was pretty slow to say the least. I got on this place a month ago and set up on a path near a scrape and a rub line. I've been getting good pictures of some nice 8-point bucks and didn't want to waste a chance on waiting on a 10. It was 1730 and I had just about 30 minutes left so I figured I'd let out a grunt sequence and see what the magic (1/2) hour had left.
As soon as I blew, I caught a mass moving from right to left and thought it was a pig. So I got my rifle up and waited on it to come in. Hunting mesquite bottoms, it's difficult to see very far in any direction but as soon as I saw him, I knew he was a good deer to shoot. He made his way to me on a rope but I never could get a shot. He tried to wind me me but I had him confused with the tarsal glands I had scattered in the area. He licked his nose, put his nose up and smelled all he could - then was leaving.....his exit was a heart shot with that cheap ol' CoreLock from a 7mm.
I watched him fall down - actually, it looked like he got knocked down by a linebacker. I gave him a few minutes and made thanks to God for a nice hunt and headed his way. He was only 80yds. or so but I didn't see him. By this time, it was past legal light and my flashlight wasn't enough. I heard a blow just 20yds. from me and figured it was him. I backed out and decided to let him make his peace.
I didn't sleep a wink last night and got out early this morning. A heavy frost was going to make it very difficult but I started from point of impact and decided to fan out my parameter. He bled out not 60yds. from the shot. It was a good, clean heart shot and by the time I reversed course, he sprayed a ton of blood for about 30yds.
I didn't even put a tape to him...don't care how wide he is or what he scores-just know I'm dang proud to have harvested him (and to have found him).
I've named a lot of my deer and fittingly, he'll be named "Una Mes" as I've only been hunting property a month.
I also met our local celebrity Tye at the plant. Good guy and was dropping off some slick heads for a friend.
