Rex, whats the purpose of grabbing a live snake? I could never especially a rattle snake. Your got more b@$$'s than me
Used to be for the adrenaline rush. Watched my pops catch snakes all my life and followed his footsteps by catching my first venomous snake when I was 11 in ETX. I got good at it and enjoyed it. Same reason I did a lot of stupid things as a kid I suppose. As I get older, I catch them less and less but will still grab one on occasion.
I have only been struck twice. Luckily, one hit me in the finger but I had already milked and defanged it. The other was walking back to camp after I stuck a 4-wheeler in a "dried-up" pond. It hit me just above the ankle and didn't penetrate my boots.
The live snakes also sell for more.
I used to catch them back in my teens in New Mexico and would sell them to BCMC who would milk them to make anti-venom. Made some good beer money when you would find a den. A lot of times when they are denned up, they are pretty lethargic and easy to catch.
Was hit once by a 5 footer when I pinned his head too far back with the catch stick. I reached down to thumb him and he reached back and caught me between my thumb and fingers. Hand started to swell so headed to BCMC (with snake that got me in the bag) for treatment. By the time I got there, the swelling was going down so all I had was a dry bite (no venom injected - just residual on fangs) which I was thankful for. A smaller snake would have gave me all it had.
Cool pictures David. Although I would never get my face that close to the business end because if you did get hit, the swelling could add a lot more serious complications to the bite.
