Snakes, Snakes and couple of more snakes

Snakes, Snakes and couple of more snakes - 02/09/15 10:55 PM

As some of you know I hunt on a ranch in West Texas and of course there is the running joke now that I bribe my way in to lower prices. Going with that joke, what would it be worth to the Owner, not the rancher, to crawl in a 2' crawlspace and pull these out from underneath it? grin

We have done it twice now

If grin I was there you would have went in and I would have closed up the crawl space. I am sure it would have been a much larger crawl space shortly there after.

Honestly, if you had seen the method we used to get them out, you would think we are crazy. Next time, I am strapping a gopro to my head. My father and I both went in, he was first. He would grab the snakes and throw them behind him to me. I would grab them and turn to throw them out the small opening so the other guys could put them in the snake box.

At one point, dad threw one back to me, I threw one out the opening. The guys outside didn't get the one I threw outside and it was heading back in. Dad thought I was clear and threw another one at me..two in front and one behind. They almost lost some flooring bang

By the way, is this recent? I'm headed to my panhandle place this weekend and I'm thinking they might be starting to move. When I was there back in late November/early December, I killed 4 that were within 20 yards of the wife and kids.

Think the last batch was about a week or so ago. I wasn't there for it, just the first batch. They should still be in or around their dens, but if you get a warm spell like we have this week, there will be more than one out of the dens. So if you see one, expect a few more to be close.

One of the guys brought his nephew up to the lease and they wanted to catch a snake. We caught a rat snake and put it in the ice chest. We ended up driving around longer than we thought. The snake went to "sleep". When we got back to camp, we took the snake out and made it seem alive when we took it over to him. Grabbed the tail and rubbed the back of his neck until he went to sleep...slowly spin the tail in your fingers and the snake rolled over on its back.

Nephew went home and caught a snake to show his buddies what he learned. Grabbed it by its tail and tried to rub it behind its head...he got bit. Have to admit, I felt kind of bad

Used to be for the adrenaline rush. Watched my pops catch snakes all my life and followed his footsteps by catching my first venomous snake when I was 11 in ETX. I got good at it and enjoyed it. Same reason I did a lot of stupid things as a kid I suppose. As I get older, I catch them less and less but will still grab one on occasion.

I have only been struck twice. Luckily, one hit me in the finger but I had already milked and defanged it. The other was walking back to camp after I stuck a 4-wheeler in a "dried-up" pond. It hit me just above the ankle and didn't penetrate my boots.

The live snakes also sell for more.

I used to catch them back in my teens in New Mexico and would sell them to BCMC who would milk them to make anti-venom. Made some good beer money when you would find a den. A lot of times when they are denned up, they are pretty lethargic and easy to catch.

Was hit once by a 5 footer when I pinned his head too far back with the catch stick. I reached down to thumb him and he reached back and caught me between my thumb and fingers. Hand started to swell so headed to BCMC (with snake that got me in the bag) for treatment. By the time I got there, the swelling was going down so all I had was a dry bite (no venom injected - just residual on fangs) which I was thankful for. A smaller snake would have gave me all it had.

Cool pictures David. Although I would never get my face that close to the business end because if you did get hit, the swelling could add a lot more serious complications to the bite.

This is why I was so worried when I killed those two 18 inchers back in November. Too close to the wife and kids. Not sure my 9 or 6 year-olds would have survived a full dose from a little one.

EFFFFFFF THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
