A tribute to my father

A tribute to my father - 01/12/15 01:10 PM

We lost my dad a year ago today to multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects your blood. He had taken me hunting and fishing as long as I can remember. My mom said that I used to get so mad at him when he would go on trips without me, that I wouldn't speak to him for days when he got back. On the morning I was born, my dad was supposed to fish a tournament on Moss Lake. On the way to the hospital, he told my mom that there was no way I could be a boy. When she asked why, he said that a boy wouldn't screw up his fishing trip. I later told him I just wanted to go with him. He was literally my lifelong hunting partner and fishing guide. This past season was definitely not the same.

When my brother and I split up his guns, I knew I wanted to do something special. This past summer, I decided at I wanted to take an animal with each of his weapons. I wasn't sure I was going to get it done but here it is....

Opening weekend dove hunt in east texas..

Pheasant hunt in Kansas...

Young County...

My grandad's 30-30 from the early 50's got double duty...

This was our last trip to the coast together, September 2013...

Thanks for looking! He was a special man to a lot of people.. He is dearly missed. RIP Pops...

angel He was right there with you just like mine still is today. I lost my hunting and fishing guru better known as Dad in 1983. I am very aware still to this day of his thoughts and what he would say just as you are and will be.

Re: A tribute to my father - 01/20/15 12:24 AM

What a nice way to honor your best friend. I lost my Dad in 98 and a piece of me went with him. He took me fishing and hunting from a very young age. A man who loved hunting gave up so much to teach someone who couldn't keep still and couldn't be quite. A person who always had my interest at heart no matter what a jerk I was. I knew I could call him any time for any reason and he would be there with unrestrained support. Sure don't have anyone like that now.

Re: A tribute to my father - 01/21/15 05:16 PM

I almost envy those of you who had a dad that you grew up in the outdoors with and looked up to him as a mentor and friend. That is a special thing not everyone gets to experience. Blessed are those who do.
