New Year's Eve Buck - 01/02/15 12:32 AM
New Years Eve is the last day of the season here and I still had 1 tag out of 6 left to fill. The plan was to go out with the crossbow and try to fill my last tag.
Well it was cold and windy (-13 with wind to 30 mph) but I decided to go anyways. I put on long johns, insulated pants, insulated snow camo overalls, 2 sweaters, soft shell jacket, insulated snow camo parka, balaclava and a toque on top of the balaclava.
Waddled into a hardwood bush and sat on the ground about 20 yards from a main run connecting a bedding area and a standing bean field. Got settled in about 2:00 pm.
At 4:30 pm I see movement about 100 yards away. At first glance I thought it was fawn. As it got closer I decided it was a small doe. As it got closer I thought it's an average size doe. At 20 yards the deer gave me a nice broadside shot and I took it as the last tag I had left was for doe or buck.
Deer gives the nice donkey kick goes 30 yards and stops for 5 or 6 seconds. It than walks 5 more yards and tips over. It puts it head down right away any and about 60 seconds later it legs twitch twice and and is than still. I wait another 20 minutes and slowly approach.
As I am walking up to the deer it seems to be getting bigger. When I get to it it appears to be the biggest doe I have ever seen. I was like that can't be right so I check the organs and sure enough it is a buck that has already shed it's antlers.
Turned out to be a good size deer - 198 lbs dressed. I must have been hallucinating from the cold when I first saw it.
