Great Aoudad Hunt with Muley Mike and Aoudad Adventures

Great Aoudad Hunt with Muley Mike and Aoudad Adventures - 10/14/14 01:45 AM

I had a great hunt this weekend outside of Comstock near the Devil's River. On the first morning, we spotted a ram with a few ewes but could not get a good look so Clint, my guide and ranch manager, suggested we hike downhill and across a ridge to get a better look. He was a nice young ram but not what I was looking for. We moved on to another area and spotted a herd of 20+ and watched them for a while when we saw a very dark red and mature ram moving through and decided to go after him. We stalked and maneuvered across 4 canyons for 3+ hours and came upon another group of about 20 young rams and just about gave up when Clint spotted the ram again and this time we were able to stalk within 380 yards and had no way of getting closer so I set up for the shot and was able to put it right through his shoulder and he stumbled for 10 yards and collapsed. It was a great hunt for me and I am still sore from the hiking.

The second afternoon, we went after a Corsican and spotted a nice ram across a canyon but the stalk would have been significant nor did I know where my 7mm Rem Mag would hit from where we were (over 600 yards) so I passed. The other hunter, Tony, met up with us and ranged him at about 650 yards and said I could borrow his 338 Lapua (Sako TRG) and he would even get it set up for the shot. We hiked down to get within 580 yards and he adjusted his Night Force scope for the range. I settled in behind the rifle but could not get comfortable in the prone position. After a great deal of coaching to adjust about 18" for wind and moving around I finally felt solid when I hear "don't shoot, bigger ram approaching." The larger ram was moving in on a ewe so I watched him a bit and when he got to the peak of the ridge and gave me a perfect broadside, I squeezed the trigger but missed and they bolted. Since he was at the peak, we could not determine where I missed but my gut feel was a bit high. Although I missed, it was an awesome experience of teamwork with Clint, Mike, Steve (other guide) and Tony all working to help me get set up.

Awesome hunt and experience. Bunkhouse was comfortable, food was awesome (thanks to Clint's wife, Michelle) and camaraderie was great.

Sore from hiking? You look to be in top physical condition!! Nice ram Tim. I'll be headed up your way around Thanksgiving, maybe we can meet up and I can unload this elk euro I've got hanging in my shop on you

Hey Taylor! Yes, I am still sore. I was definitely not in good enough shape for this type of hunt. Gives me motivation for next year in Durango. Give me a shout anytime you are in the area and we can catch up over a beer and get that euro from you.
