Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/18/14 07:03 PM

Thanks y'all hopefully more tomorrow. The wildebeest stalk was good but the kudu stalk was awesome. Will go into stories when we get back, this will make you want to quit hunting wt and save money to do this every other year or two. If you haven't been here and can find a way to pay for it. It will be worth every penny and then some. Will try to keep you posted.

Good luck with the waterbuck. Those things are known for not bleeding well because their hair is oily and grips the blood real well. Hit it right or the tracking is gonna suck!

She will do fine I am sure they don't seem to be near a spooky as the others. The damn gemsbok and impala are freaking as spooky as our whitetail and the zebras will kill a stalk, the black wildebeest are spooky and go every direction when spooked, and I can't believe how tough the eland are they are worse than whitetail.

No snakes so far, they haven't seen any for two months due to the cold which is comical it was t shirt weather and they had on coats

I've shot a ton of stuff and hunted a ton of stuff. Eland is hands down the hardest thing I've ever hunted. Good luck and tell her congrats!

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/18/14 10:56 PM

Thanks Jensent I have to agree and the zebras are always around the eland making it worse. Passed a solid bull tonight didn't have the big tuff, Kacee is begging to trade Eland for giraffe or the black wildebeest who knows might shoot both. You were right about one thing nothing is like hunting here.

Re: Q - 06/19/14 05:27 PM

We have maybe changed plans she took a 41.5" gemsbok this afternoon after a 39" sable busting our stalk my fault as I called off a head on shot in chest and opted to try to get her broad side so their are options now we will see how it plays out we either take giraffe, waterbuck, black wildebeest, impala warthog or option #2 sable impala wart hog, or eland black wildebeest waterbuck wart hog and impala. She wants the sable option but animals will dictate pictures coming of gemsbok.

Re: Q - 06/19/14 10:23 PM

You guys looking at African hunt make sure to check out Omujeve the quality of the animals is incredible and I can't tell you how many times out ph says good but think we can do lil bit better. We go with his call every time I told him 50" min on kudu when the kudu we spotted he says 49 which it is a tad over I know you want 50 with the rabies killing so many older bulls you should consider and then if we see a 55" or better we shoot him too. All the PH's say he is big time ph for elephant and is one of best in Africa and we are fortunate to get to hunt with him. He has been absolutely great with Kacee keeping her calm and all animals have been taken from shooting sticks.

BMD, I have never been, but have several family members and friends that have gone several times. Maybe because I dont know the difference, but the animals she is harvesting, appear of the highest quality from just the photos ( In comparison to photos I have seen overall)

Sure looks like a well managed area.

Prolly shoot the warthog and maybe another kudu if right one shows this trip was for her I promised her since she was 8 I would take her and if you guys could see her smiles and reactions you would know why I just sit back and watch the show. It is more important for me for her to shoot and this memory last long after I am gone, the dads here will tell you nothing like seeing your kid succeed. Time of my life I have only shot a few times at running baboons. I may also shoot am impala or possible another Gemsbok when her hunt is complete

I know exactly how you feel. Took my 16 yr old daughter on a safari back in 2008, and will get back there in the next couple of years if it's the last thing I do. The place get's into your blood and dreams and just won't leave. smile

They are dipped here and salted and shipped to US dry except the girraffe I had to pay a pretan charge to prep it for the trip will figure out more on that one tomorrow the skulls are bleached in my case just the skull cap needed for mount as I sawed off the skulls like a taxidermist to cut my bill saves me about 90 per head. I will pay taxi bill for all prep work before I leave don't have to but cash her talks, then will receive another bill in six months to ship the crate of skulls and hides to US. Then they go to your taxi, so it is long process the meat is sold by ranches to off set cost of the animals they purchase and some is donated for food nothing hear is wasted the skinners will take anything left over

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/21/14 03:30 AM

Thank y'all she dropped the big G with one shot to just below the head and immediately shot him two times in chest with 7/08 and he was done. They are absolutely huge she was so proud of her self and the PH's and trackers were all wound up it was an awesome experience. No way can I describe this place but if you can find a way to get here do it! I save up a long time to do this. If you do it bring more than you think you will spend. It gets kinda crazy everything is negotiable I traded the eland for the big G so you never know just make a new plan. I am tapping the breaks now. We are hunting baboons tomorrow as I want one bad

Great times and some great critters clap

Hope the new house has high ceilings cause with the Big-G gonna need them.

You know that Big-G shin bones make some great knife scales. custom knives with scales from her Big-G would be cool things to have and use on future hunts. Bet some of the knife makers on here could make that happen.

That little round will get it done on big critters as long as the shooter can do their part and Kacee has proven she can handle it.

Tomorrow is last day hunting we are hunting baboons all day so we will see how it goes smile. Tracker and ph think a lot of Kacee and ph said she shoots better than a lot of the guys he deals with. All one shot kills, said she is so smooth on stalks. Our ph is an awesome guy with big time credentials he calls what an animal is long before I can even find them. It is amazing. This has truly been something I will never forget and will likely be coming back to this little bit of heaven known as Africa. Still amazed at the way things go here, let's make a plan

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/22/14 01:04 PM

I agree with you about the challenge of the black wildebeest. Last year, I made my worst--and then my best--shot on one. My first shot was off sticks at 230 yds. The shot was low, just creasing the sternum. We chased after the animal, but he was faster and pulling away. My second shot was a prayer at just over 400 yards right before the bull joined in with a group of 40 or so cows. It angled through both lungs and he fell just as he joined in the herd. I also shot a baboon on the last day of hunting. Funny how that works out.

Love your pictures and stories! We will all expect a full debriefing when you return, of course.

Sitting by the fire on our last night in Africa it is getting cold outside a new couple from Texas just arrived and shot their first gemsbok, and the rest have left to head to other ranches to hunt. So just the four of us and PH's and owners left her for our dinner. Sure it will be another great dinner.

Careful there, You're getting old like me and those falls hurt a lot worse than they used to.
Was it worse than falling down the hill our first year in Shamrock?

Will either of you be able to enter da plane? Figured your heads are so swole up, may not fit through the door...

Well, Momma will be glad to see her baby girl/only girl I guess. Now for the REAL LONG plane ride home..

Hope your leg won't be too cramped on the flt home.

Just curious what is the process of getting the capes back home for mounts? Also do you get to bring meat back or is it used by the local tribes? Sorry if these questions sound dumb I know nothing about these trips to Africa. Great pics and glad y'all had a blast and memories to last forever.

The capes are treated here and skulls boiled and all crated to be shipped home salted and dried except the giraffe I had it tanned here to prevent any chance of hair slippage. Some of the meat is used to feed people that can't afford to eat and some is sold I believe. The crate won't get to me for 5 or 6 months.

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/23/14 04:57 PM

You need to get up and move on the plane to try and avoid a blood clot (I guess that's the nurse in me coming out). Especially with an injury, ie swelling and redness, you need to be careful. Just a plain ride alone can be dangerous for the threat of blood clots.

My boss went a few years ago. He had them mounted there and shipped back in a monster crate. Luckily we have a loading dock here at the hospital so he could just set it on a trailer. He said he was concerned a taxi here in the States might not make African animals look right but after looking at True Life Taxi in Granbury he said He'd use them next time. Pretty awesome experience and can't wait to go myself.

I bet that was a Black-backed jackal? Calling up predators is really fun until you call up a bunch of lions or a leopard. bolt

I'm game. It would be the ultimate hunting experience for me. Don't get me wrong I'd love to shoot the hooved animals but there is something about calling a bobcat in your lap and multiply that times 100 in Africa. Some people jump out of planes, ride bulls, catch snakes, and that isn't for me but calling in a huge cat: bring it on.

Jackal

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 10:49 AM

Made it home finally and crashed. Going to Dr today to have leg checked as the flight did nothing good to leg. Bruising and swelling need to make sure I don't have issue with clots for sure, I had a feeling the long flight with the bruised and hurt leg and knee could be an issue.
Posted By: TurkeyHunter

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 10:57 AM

Glad you made it without issue. Important to be aware of DVT symptoms for people that fly long hauls.

Jackal

Specifically, black-backed jackal. When I was over there last July/August, they were everywhere. But every one I saw was running like it had just sat in a tub of turpentine. My impression was the jackals are a lot more skittish than our Texas coyotes. Local ranchers get after the jackals with the same zeal as we target coyotes, but I think the jackals are mostly targets of opportunity, and seldom called in with varmint calls.

I think a camo'd predator hunter with a FoxPro and a .243 would have a blast!

BMD, I hope your knee is OK. Sometimes hunting is a full-contact sport.

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 12:31 PM

Don't massage your affected leg....you don't want a clot breaking loose. Where is it affected? Calf, behind your knee? Either way, good that you're going to get it checked out. Follow orders.

Thanks I hope so wasn't real worried til I read about DVT last night and now I figure it is best to have it checked out for sure
Posted By: TurkeyHunter

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 12:48 PM

Hopefully it's just a bruise and the doc says to just go lightly for the next few days. Flying long distance coming back with an injury or sickness totally sucks.
Posted By: Novemberyet

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 12:54 PM

Good thing you're getting it looked at. They probably send you to the ER to have a doppler. Keep us informed....and by-Gawd start another DVT thread.....the hunt is over and 11 pages means you need to start a post-hunt thread. Good luck.

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 06:46 PM

Well after x rays at dr and sonogram at hospital there is no sign of clotting just bruising he told me should have called before I go on the plane and he would have told me to stay at least 10 days before flying home. Dang it, airlines would have changed flights for medical reasons according to him. Now I know smile

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 06/25/14 07:16 PM

Kacee,
Hit up Eva Shockey. My wife just met her at a meet n greet. She said Eva was a very approachable and very excited to talk about females hunting. My wife does not hunt but Eva was very talkative just the same.

Lifesize mounts on the jackal and baboon? Everything else shoulder mounts? Great job Kacee! Why are the potatoes better over there?

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 07/06/14 09:32 PM

Just have sweet taste to then they are awesome, wall pedestal on baboon had jackal skinned life size not sure what I am doing with him yet, will do life size on baboon if and when I go back which I can't imagine not going back it is an incredible place, all others will be shoulder mounted.

Namibia is famous for its kudu biltong. Biltong is basically jerky.

Yea I have been reading a lot of the comments that follow the former model for L' Oreal and Kendall Jones. People blow my mind that they will cry over these hunts but could careless about human life. Sorry your daughter is having to go through this.

Thanks they are definitely over the top yet support abortion and have no real educated posts only based on options and ignorance and sheep mentality.

Re: Omujeve hunt in Africa - 07/23/14 11:22 AM

FYI.....Wheels up tomorrow for my own three-week safari to the Dark Continent.

This go-round, my brother will be doing most of the shooting. He wants to beat my buff from last year (good luck with that!), and since he's always coveted a dinosaur, he'll be looking for a big croc--13' or better. And, he'll be packing his 7mm Mag for 10-or-so antelope.

I'm looking for an ugly dagga boy, a zebra, and perhaps another kudu, should a big one turn up. And brother and I will be backing each other up with our .375 Hollands on the buff and croc. We backed each other for bears in Alaska a couple years back, so that will be exciting.

Wives are tagging along too, so the first week will be spent on a photo safari in and around Kruger. And there'll be time for shopping for crafts and souvenirs, as well. It'll be a true mixed bag to make everyone happy.

That said, I doubt we can top Kaycee for all-around exhilaration! One thing's for sure.....no Facebook postings for us.

That pic is greatness. The liberal, obummer voter writing the comment is just pathetic. When I first read it, I thought it had to be a joke. Surely no one is that stupid.

Everyone knows those critters havnt been around in hundreds of years. bolt
