They should just really start to drop in numbers these next 2 weeks. I spoke with a friend in Brady and he said that almost all of his bucks still had antlers as of today he has been seeing. The few he has had that have dropped have been the really young 1 or 2 yrs and their numbers are low.

Stx, what actually triggers them to drop? I have found 3 sets off of very mature deer and lots of avg antlers. Nothing very small yet. My biggest set is 148" with an 18" spread.

How can a big mature deer drop before a young one?

a drop in testosterone causes the antlers to fall off.

It could be poor body condition due to the lack of forage or their heavy rutting activity. I have seen deer put into nutritional stress due to severe drought and heavy rutting shed 2 months early. I think that could have been causing them to shed early once the testosterone levels dropped due to poor body condition. Naturally a mature bucks antlers are easier to find than younger ones due to size. I think they might shed at the same time just are not finding the younger ones as easy. Also I sometimes think younger bucks are still wanting to rut and still chasing the doe fawns around so this might cause them to hold their antlers a little longer.
