Rattlesnakes and Wild Hogs, oh my!

Rattlesnakes and Wild Hogs, oh my! - 03/18/13 11:44 PM

I started off my spring break for 2013 by being the camera guy for an episode of Bullets & Broadheads on Sportsman Channel. We had the opportunity to video a hunting show about the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, the largest in the world. We were able to get several cool shots of the booths and the Jaycee's handling the snakes. Plus we were able to video the rattlesnake hunting itself on a ranch just a few miles east of Sweetwater. following the hunt, we finished the night off by putting on chaps and getting inside the pen with over 1,000 rattlesnakes beside our feet. This was a very interesting feeling....... Every snake you see in the pics below is alive.

After we had our fun playing with snakes, I spent the remainder of the week pig hunting with a vietnam veteran friend of mine from NM. He loves meat hunting and has never had the chance to harvest some wild pork before. We were able to kill 4 pigs during our 3 days of hunting. The first morning I killed a 100lb sow in the dark, then we hopped in the polaris ranger and chased down the weened babies, he got two with his AR before they left the field.

Then later that night, we went spotlighting and was able to chase down a 200lb boar, a pig he was very happy to brag about the size. What amazed me was he gut shot it on the run with his 300 win mag using a 180gr bullet and I still had to finish it off in the head with my .270 600 yds later. I've gut shot several big pigs with a .270 but never had them go past 100yds.........pretty crazy. We took pics in the night and then had it propped up for pics in the daylight the next morning. All in all, it was a very eventful spring break.

Why do they have their cuffs duck taped? I am thinking there would be a rush of some other body fluids if that were me!

If you stand still in the pit long enough, the rattlesnakes will try to crawl up your pant legs to get warm

It's to keep the "rush of some other body fluid" from getting on the floor rofl

I am not entirely sure, but if I remember correctly, there was a lady that had a snake go up her pants and was bit. My guess is that the duct tape has something to do with that incident confused2

Any idea when the episode will run?

My boys and I were there, and went out on the Saturday hunt. We only caught one snake, and left when everybody took a break. My kids would be excited if they ended up in the footage y'all took.

I love the duct tape around the ankles in the pic of the men in the pen with the snakes. Just another use for the most versatile product on the planet.

I grew up in Sweetwater catching snakes, it was kind of a coming of age thing I guess... I heard they were getting $13 a pound for them this year... That is a great price we use to make good money at $8 a pound.
