Know what this is?

Have no clue. Was walking aroung the lease last weekend and found an old windmill base, a house rock foundation. A few yards away, there were a couple rolls of old barb/hog wire, old wash tub, 5 2 1/2' x 5'x 8" old concrete slabs and laying beside them was:







It has a 5' piece of 3/4' rod with square nuts on the ends. Any idea what this is? Weights about 25lbs together. Thanks

For a wind mill?

Looks like it is the axle ends from some type of Ag equipment axle such as a row binder, drag combine, hay bailer, drag swather or hay cutter. These end are put on wooden axle to increase life of axle, and to prevent having to replace handmade axles frequently. The wooden wheel hubs fit over these and are keep packed with hog grease and bacon rinds. Wear out pretty fast.

The reason fodifferencesce is the big wheel was under the heavy side of machinery such as bail case, swather header gear, straw elevator, etc. The 5 foot rod keep the wheels on axle hubs. Are there any marking, casting, mark at all on any parts. Rub spot with welder chalk to high lite marks. All the wood has burned or rotted away and the mules went south.

You might send the pictures to somebody like the Heritage Museum at TT or The Great Plains Museum in Altus Oklahoma and they might be able to help you.

I believe it's cast metal. I really have no idea what it is. The two end pieces look to be the same, on the ends.

I found something similar on my place, and I was told by an old-timer that it was an axle.

It kind of looks like the carriage hubs, but doesn't have bearings.

redfish- no, it is the two pieces connected with a 4' metal rod. It was close to where I think a wind mill was at one time. I have seen the leathers/parts for a wind mill, but they were alot smaller.

It is the inner parts of an wooden wagon probably that had steel wheels. This part fits inside the hub of the wheel and is greased. There were no bearing as we know it today. I am rebuilding a hay wagon with the same parts. The outside nut is either right or left turn. The 5' rod hold the axle, wheel in line.
There is also some U shaped bolts that hold the part to the wood of the axle. These appear to be missing. PM me for pics.
