Widest 4 pt I Have Seen

Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 02:38 AM
This is the widest 4 pt I have ever seen. I would like for him to be my cull, but I hunt in an AR county, and by AR rules, he is my trophy. I have him aged at 2 1/2 and not sure if he will ever be anything more.

I don't think he is wide enough to meet AR's IMO.

That is not a cull unless you wipe the milk off his lips
Cull.

Looks pretty young. I probably wouldn't shoot him yet.

Give him another year. This years antler growth was not as good as last years. He could have been an 8 on a wet year

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 03:08 AM
Here is another pic more head on. I think he is close to 13, but likely too close to chance.
He will very likely get another year.

I've seem bigger 4 points...let him ride. One deer isn't going to make or break anything. If he's still a 4 point next year, whack him

Killing young deer is kinda pointless IMHO

He is a "point less" buck
but he is safe for now in an AR county.

You have a young deer that is easily wider than 13 inches. Let him go for another year and see what you have.

given the option I know who I would go with and that's all I can say on that.
I wouldn't shoot the 4 pointer in question on my place...too many other deer need to go first.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 03:58 AM
There was an interview that Cable did with the top TPWD Biologist and he said that he would leave the larger deer this year and take the ones that don't have the better genetics. I believe STX also manages with the same philosophy. Don't see the need to continue feeding him if I don't think he will be a true trophy in 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years. It has nothing to do with shooting young deer.

That deer is too damn young to have any idea what he will be in three or four years. That is the bottom line!

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 04:07 AM
A very young deer with a 14-15 inch spread during extreme drought conditions should get a pass.

There are many ranches that would not let that deer feed another year. So, that is your bottom line, but not for other places. Guess it would depend on location, past experience, collected data and deer herd

If you are on MLD and need to fill buck tags, take him. You gotta start somewhere.

He is young and won't make AR I don't think. If you have a good amount of deer you will do a lot more by taking does and getting your ratio and overall population to better numbers than taking out this little guy.

I would leave him be for sure. At least give him one more year to see what he does. I think he may put on some points next year.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 11:13 AM
I think he may be 2 and a half but still a young deer. shoot him if your lookin for meat but i think he will still be a slick horn 4pt next year with a little more mass. I doesnt matter what anybody on here thinks. myself included. If ya dont want the venison let him go another year.

Here's a 4 pt i shot a few years ago, 17.5" wide, field dressed 115 lb. Pretty big for central tx standards. Dunno how old he was, but he wasnt young.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 05:04 PM
My bud shot a 24 1/2" wide 4 point with lots of mass last year, it was just as exciting as a 160" deer, that thing was neat. 6.5yrs old as well. Let him go, worse case he can only get bigger.

That deer might be a 6 next year, and if he is, he'll still suck antler wise.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 05:43 PM
The original 4 point in the game cam pictures is a 1 1/2 year old, maybe 2 1/2 at most. Either way, a very young deer. He has a perfect basket frame that is pretty big for his age. What makes you think that frame won't grow into a 6 or 8 point the next year, or even more the next? If you want the meat and just want to shoot something, then tag him or a doe. But if you are managing the property for bigger deer to grow, this would be the last deer I would cull out. I head-shoot does for meat. Does need to be culled more than bucks anyway, just about any place you are hunting in Texas. If he gets to be an old 4 point (which he won't), drill his arse.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 05:57 PM
He will likely get a pass just to see what he becomes next year. Hopefully we get some rain so he has the opportunity to grow into something bigger, if he has potential.

Re: Widest 4 pt I Have Seen - 10/20/11 05:58 PM
I personally do not think he will ever amount to anything. The other boys in the first pic appear to be the same age, and are already showing potential. That said I am not sure I would cull him just yet...

When I compare him to the others, I just think with his body size he should be further along than he is in these pics. We have younger deer with better headgear than this guy.

I love how many people on this board think everyone in the world should have the same goals while hunting that they do. That deer would get shot by one of the kids on our lease at first sight and we would have a great memory of it even if it does not meet the requirements of somebody that hunts across the state and has never been to my place.
To the OP, if he makes you happy and is legal then bust him. It's nobody else's business to tell you what to do.
As soon as he jumps the fence to my lease...WHACK

I posted this to gather other opinions, even if I don't agree with them all. I truly understand that different parts of the state do different things. Since I hunt in the Hill Country, we have a much higher deer density and are forced to do things differently than other areas of the state.
