Sad but good dove hunt.

Sad but good dove hunt. - 09/21/11 01:20 AM

A good friend of mine had a 6 year old lab that was diagnosed with heart failure a couple months ago. Long story short, after doing everything he or the vet could do it was time to put "Oso" down. Another good friend of ours is a vet so we made arangments to put Oso down in the dove field all three of us grew up hunting in. After he got a few birds and we could see he was ready, we put him down and burried him.
We all agreed it was better than spending his last minutes in a vet clinic. The rest of the hunt we used my yellow dog "Trouble" to get the birds out of that muddy excuse for a pond.

Sad, but if you have to go it's best to go doing what you love. Sorry for your buddy's loss.

Sorry for the loss but you gave him the best parting gift that he could ever want. I'm sure he went with good memories of years gone by.

Re: Sad but good dove hunt. - 09/21/11 02:03 AM

That's just about the single best thing I've ever heard of someone doing for their dog in a situation like that. I can't stand to think that I might someday have to do that for one of mine, but I'd a hell of a lot rather see them go in the field chasing rabbits than in some vets office...

Oso fetched my birds, and licked my face,
His health was failing, and with God's grace,
We took him out, to do again what he did love,
Before he met, with our Master above,
Shots were fired, and off he went again,
Pursuing a love, that we both shared in,
It was his last hunt, he and I both knew,
No sense in prolonging the suffering, he was going through,
So we said "Goodbye," and the vet laid him to rest,
His soul no longer on earth, where we all are a guest,
Oso is gone, but his memories will remain,
Until we do meet, in that eternal hunting ground again.
I know he'd be glad, our hunt was a success,
And that Trouble filled in, and I don't have to guess,
That Oso is watching, thinkin he's still the best,
Wondering if Trouble, can stand up to the test,
Trouble will do his best, wish Oso didn't have to part,
I'll always remember, his special place in my heart.

Re: Sad but good dove hunt. - 09/21/11 03:34 PM

"I will lend to you for a while, a Pup, God said,
For you to love him while he lives and mourn for him when he’s dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three,
But will you, ‘till I call him back, take care of him for me?

He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief
You’ll always have his memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this pup to learn.

I’ve looked the whole world over in search of teachers true,
And from the folk that crowd life’s land, I have chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again?

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.

We’ll shelter him with tenderness; we’ll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay.
But should you call him back much sooner than we’ve planned, We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand.

If, by our love, we’ve managed, your wishes to achieve,
In memory of him we loved to help us while we grieve,
When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,
We’ll have yet another Pup, and love him all his life."

Wow. That was really touching. You did good. This is exactly what I wanted to do when I had to put my golden down but a vet to come out to my ranch was much more expensive. That dogs last moments were as peaceful as they could have been. Awesome story.

That was the best way to do it. I lost mine last summer and unfortunately she did not have the last hunt like Oso. The night before I had to take water to her.

Sounds like he was a heck of a dog. Glad he got one last hunt in before he had to go, very cool to do it like that since it had to be done. Looks like y'all got a mess of birds in his honor.

Re: Sad but good dove hunt. - 09/23/11 01:43 PM

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand;
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears,
You’d not want me to suffer so,
The time has come, please let me go.

Take me where my need they’ll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you,
Who has this painful thing to do,
We’ve been so close, we two, these years,
Don’t let your heart hold back its tears.

Sorry for your loss.
