Hey Warthog, He seems to be enjoying himself up at Sheppard. He is learning a lot about F16s. I've been building the F16s for about 30 years at Lockeed here in Fort Worth, so I'm kind of proud that he gets to maintain them. I'm on the F35 program now, so eventually he will probably be on them when they phase out the F16. If you talk to him tell him is ole man said hey.

Yes Sir, I can remember when I myself was a young Seaman Apprentice. It was the begining of a pretty amazing journey. Can't believe it was almost 13 years ago. Man time flys. I thank your son for his courage and service. These are pretty tough times to be in the military (for those serving as well as for their families). Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

A friend of my daughters was stop lost. I had never head of it until now. He was a sniper for 101 Air Born. (yes he was a real one) any way he was killed this past spring by a IUD.

If you mean what he did with his weapon... PM me. Danny, VaWaterfowler, and I have known each other since they day we reported to Basic Combat Training and have been in the same unit ever since.

This is our son...He is presently stationed in Missouri but will soon re locate to Fort Knox in Kentucky. He has been in the army for 5 years. Has spent a year in South Korea and 15 months in iraq. He is a Sargent but will be promoted to staff sargeant in March. He is also airborne. Very proud of him!

Here's our boy, Justin. Pic is a year or 2 old. Did some adventure filled time in Iraq as a Ranger in a recon unit on the Iranian border, and has since gotten into SF. Currently stationed in Colorado and is training with a partner for both the Sapper and Ranger Challenges.

Yeah IEDs especially the small ones were hard to see some would be on the ground some hanging in trees not to mention the flamethrower would set them off sometimes usually pretty close to the guy operating the flamethrower

I went across the pond in 2004 so our rules of engagement(ROE) were alot less strict then they are now so needless to say we did alot of damage. The first pic is right after my vehicle was hit with a IED that was made out of two 155mm artillary shells. The second pic is of me and my M14. Loved that rifle...deadly accurate. The third pic is of me and my best friend that was killed Sept. 13 2004 by and IED he stepped on. RIP SSG. Guy Hagy The last pic is of my son that is named after him "Gage Hagy McAlister"

Thanks amcalister we engineers might not love doing route clearance but we are good at it. Ive led infantry and scouts into many a village in Iraq and all of them reached their objective safely. Last deployment we found and cleared well over 100 IEDs without a KIA. Thanks for your service.

I cannot believe I've not noticed this thread before. I want so much to thank all of you have have served, from the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU!

I called my Mom on 9/11. I wanted to join right then. But at the time I was outside the age limit (38). Also she reminded me I had a family to support and a 2nd son on the way. I told my mom that things had changed and we were going to be into this for a long time. She didn't think so.

Ten years later my family members have served 6 tours:

My younger brother a Texas Army National Gaurd Combat Engineer was the Company Commander of Alpha Company 386th EN BN at FOB Caldwell Iraq (2004-2005) - he brought his entire company home safe, my nephew Tennesee Army National Guard - 3 tours doing convoy duty in Iraq, and my cousin did 2 tours in Iraq with the Marines (loaded ordnance on F/18s). While I may not have served, my family has and continues to do so.

I think my Mom knows now what I meant 10 years ago, especially with my oldest son now 17 and thinking of following his Uncle into the Army.

I went to Iraq late 08 through mid 09 with B Trp 3/124 Cav doing convoy escort. Was a driver primarily, but also got some time in the turret of our ASV. I also drove/gunned a 1151 occasionally, but the ASV was my baby. If I one the lottery today I'd find a way to buy it back.

This was my usual crew, left to right, Sgt. Frye, Pfc Grey, and Sgt Womble. Pfc Grey was a fellow mechanic that just wanted to be out on the road with us. I'll never forget the times we had.

I snapped this photo on a return trip back to Adder/Tallil, honestly it was one of the few "beautiful" moments over there. I hope to remember that moment for the rest of my life.

Just wanted to give a special thanks to SapperTitan. Without guys like him doing his job, we may not have succeeded at our mission. Route clearance did a wonderful job over there making the roads safer for us. Thank you brother.

We had a semi-traditional Thanksgiving dinner... these were our "Turkeys"... more like Turkey vultures but some guys got them cooked anyways.

Seen a lot of Turkey's in Uruzgan province but they didnt look too healthy and I ain't tryin to get bird flu LOL

Yeah the Turkeys were sad, we had goats and lambs brought in at other times and butchered them and grilled. DFAC food gets boring after about a week so we ate more with the locals I think than there.

Our Marine just got home from Afghanistan last week! woohoo

Thanks for all your service! Glad to see everyone making it home safely. My brother in law leaves this December for his 3rd (and last) tour in Afghanistan. Please pray for his safe return.

Here is my son, Daniel, who is a Sergeant in the Marine Corps (he followed my footsteps as I am a retired Marine). He is in the reserves here in Fort Worth and going to school full time after having served six years active duty.

Here is my younger son, Mark, who is a medic in the Army and deploying to Afghanistan for his first time tomorrow (Monday). Mama is NOT happy about that.

Here is a pic of my squad back in July when we competed in out Battalion Sapper stakes. It is a squad competition that each Company participates in. We did 12 mile ruck march, bridge recon, breached an obstacle, land navigation, and at the end we did this 11 row obstacle. My squad built the 11 row in 32 min to standard. Only 3 teams finished the 11 row in the allotted time and we were the only team to break into 30 min. Very proud of this squad and all their hard work.

my wife's son Karl Mills. Just graduated from basics in Ft. Leonard Wood and currently going through AIT in Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio for medic.

Our Nephew, Specialist Ertel. Returned from deployment to Kuwait and Iraq end of February 2013.
This picture is the day of the board review, Soldier of the Quarter at Ft Benning Ga.
He is in the 3rd Brigade Heavy Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion.
He is 12B now. While deployed he reenlisted for 5 years and will be headed to Virginia to become
an Aircrewman on the Chinook Helo, May 2014. His roommate and battle buddy Gonzo is in the reflection,

We are very proud of him.
He did his basic training at Ft Leonard Wood Mo.
His AIT was also at Ft Leonard Wood.

Well, Our Nephew Spec. Larry Michael Ertel will graduate from WLC at Ft Benning with a 95.? grade. He made the Commandants List and was First in the PT test so he will also be awarded
The Army Physical Fitness Test Award (Iron Warrior).

He may end up in another school next week since he did so well in the school. IDR what this next class is. He is on fast track for E-5. Still set for Chinook mechanical training next May in Virginia.

UPDATE:
The boy graduates bootcamp next Friday (11/15). We will be leaving for Chicago on the 14th to see it. This time, I get to see what it looks like, because when you are in the graduation, you don't get to see anything.

He is Navy EOD, so he has BUDS prep for 3 more weeks in Great Lakes, and then heads to Florida for something like 38 weeks.

We are very proud and he is so ready to get out of bootcamp, so should be a good visit.

For my son, there isn't to many job prospects after the Army for chasing IEDs. Plus each MOS(correct me) only has so many of each rank assigned to that MOS and if there are no positions left, you find somewhere else to go or get out.

Thought I would drop a few from my travels to exotic locales...ok not so exotic lol.

God bless our troops. They never get the credit they're due. They are truly the forgotten HEROS to most of those in our society who live with their heads in the sand. I personally thank GOD everyday for the blessing I'm afforded due to the sacrifices that our troops and their families make. Thank you to all who have served our country.

Just realized I never put any pics from last deployment on this thread. Here are some of my favorites.

Never good when you go over a wall and all you see is the sky

Sometime you just gotta take a break

Spent a lot of nights huddled around this fire talking about the days events with buddies.

Sometime you gotta take a selfie while the Taliban are ambushing Afghan Army and the tanker trucks they are escorting.

Found a big IED down in this swampy area tunneled under the road.

After we got the explosives out of the tunnel we blew the explosives up it was about 200lbs worth and this is what the area above in the previous picture looked like after we blew it.

Congratulations! You must be very proud!

Small world man, I was at Cop Dash Towp last year. I hated going into that Shakabad greenzone, seemed like every time we went there we got shot at or there was an IED or some other fun present from the locals... When where you over there?

I am in the Air Force and sit on my butt in a basement playing on a computer. I definitely envy these guys with boots on the ground!!!!

Almost lost him on the first deployment to Afghanistan, by the grace of God he made it back. Photo is from his second deployment there. Captured RPG and a few other items. He has done very well and will probably retire before I do.

The 1st pic is of my son at some crappy place in AFG on his 2nd deployment in 2013.

The 2nd pic is of my old Barber (Henry) that is a WWII vet giving my son a free hair cut before deployment.
Old Henry cut hair in Irving, TX for over 40 years, he was in the 2nd wave at Normandy beach on D-Day, walked thru France & Germany, got caught in the Bulge & lived. A true American Hero, that rarely ever talked about his war time experience.

I do not know the words to express my thankfulness to these young men and women!!
