EATING IN THE FIFTIES



Pasta had not been invented. It was macaroni or spaghetti.

Curry was a surname.

Taco? Never saw one till I was 15.

All chips were plain.

Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking.

Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green.

Cubed sugar was regarded as posh.

Chickens didn't have fingers in those days.

None of us had ever heard of yogurt.

Healthy food consisted of anything edible!

Cooking outside was called camping.

Seaweed was not a recognized food.

'Kebab' was not even a word... never mind a food.

Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white
gold.

Prunes were medicinal and stewed.

Surprisingly Muesli was readily available. It was called cattle feed.

Pineapples came in chunks or were round with a hole in the middle, in
a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one.

Water came out of the tap. If someone had suggested bottling it and
charging more than gasoline for it, they would have become a laughing
stock.

There were three things that we never ever had on/at our table in the
fifties . . . elbows, hats and cell phones!

......and there was always two choices for each meal...


"Take it" or Leave it"............

Another one. When you entered a house, you removed your hat.

I actually won a kabob machine at Kroger in the fifties. We wore that machine out.

Reminds me of an old joke.

"Mom sent her son down to the corner grocery store to get a can of pineapple. Told her son to ask Mr. Jones about his wife. Son asked for a can of pineapple and then ask Mr. Jones about his wife. Mr. Jones replied crushed er whole. Son replied "Her did?"

And coffee was black with only two options, sugar or creamer

Bacon had a rind and came from the butcher shop. You paid the butcher on payday.

Gallon of milk came in a glass jug. Dairy products were delivered to your house.

And you got green stamps!

It still bugs me to see people wearing a hat at the table. As a kid if I did that my grandpa would slap it off my head. Haha. So I always take mine off, still, even at fast food places. I see a lot of “Cowboys” wearing their hats at the table when I’m out at restaurants, drives me crazy.

Hat off , shirt on and shoes or socks on at the table for us !!!!!!

Wasn’t born til 60, on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, ya, a damn Yankee, but have lived in Texas since 1981, so think I’m converted. Always lived by these rules while at home, and still do

When my sons were growing up, we fed their friends just about as often as we did our son. They all wore baseball hats.

I explained we didn't wear them in the house, never at the table, and in my presence if they were backwards, I would turn their heads around on their necks, until the hat faced forward.

Never had any problems with them after that, and they all growed up to be good kids!!!

When eating chicken at our house in the fifties...it came fresh from the yard. Mama would go out and catch the unlucky bird by the head...sling it around a time or two and off would come the head. The chicken of course would flop around all over the place for a minute or two. It was quite interesting to a five year old kid. Now, the ASPCA would probably have her thrown in jail.

If you had ice....you chopped it out of a tray with an ice pick.

If you bought ice it came it a solid block...not a bag.

Soft drinks were called soda pops and only came in returnable bottles....no cans and a bottle opener was required. You could get beer in cans but a beer can opener was needed. No pop tops.

Rolls were called biscuits and Mama made those fresh daily.

Vegetables came from the garden and not Walmart.

The opener for beer cans was called a church key.
