What is the longest shot you have taken and made the kill?
What were you shooting?
Lets be honest here...
mine is not all that far but it's as far as i have ever practiced - 250 yrds. HOG - .270

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/10/09 08:21 PM

550 yards, Remington .308. Wasn't any waiting to know I'd hit solid, though. At that range a 165gr .308's still going about 1.5x the speed of sound.

edited to add: Oh, that's the longest shot I've made on a game animal. I've made a couple a bit further out on pigs and other varmints, usually with .25-06 or .22-250.

400 yards Rem M 700 30.06 150gr nosler ballistic tip. It was down a shooting lane, I didn't have a rangefinder either. It was a longhorn spike trying to get with a doe, I hit him in the neck and he fell like a sack of potatos.

A yote little over 625 yards. Remington sendero in 25-06 with a Leupold vx III 3x9. First time I ever pick up this rifle (dad's). Yote was in a slow trot moving right to left. Told dad I needed to lead him and adjust for distance. He said just to put it on his chest. Well I did it my way. Pulled the trigger when the verdical hair was even with nose and horizonal was even with tips of the ears. Hit him in the ear. Always listen to dad!!!

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/10/09 09:48 PM

I was chasing some teal up a creek one day when my cousin and I came up on a little clearing on top of a small hill. I'm watching the teal go down between the trees and I hear a wood duck going away from me. I had never shot a wood duck so I instantly turn to see it flying about 30 yards out and away from me. My shotgun was in my right hand and my left hand was gripped to a tree to keep me from sliding back down the bank in the mud. I swing my shotgun up with my right arm and point as close as I can, not really able to line up the bead, I just pull the trigger and hope as he reaches 40+ yards from me. Sure enough, sucker drops down into the creek. My cousin turns and said "are you kidding me!?" I know it's not as special as some of the shots you guys have told of, since I was using a shotgun, but it was my first wood duck and I was dang proud considering I was pointing on instinct rather than line of sight with the bead.

347 yards on a doe out on an open wheat field using a Winchester Model 70 in .243 and 100 grain bullet. Boom, watch, watch, she falls down, wait and then I hear the "whomp" from the impact. Insane shot using an old 4X scope that came with the rifle back in the olden days. Now its a squirrel scope but at the time it was all I had. Doe looked like a little poodle dog at that distance.

Still very proud of that shot.

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/10/09 11:08 PM

305 yards (stepped off) head shot on a doe with a 220 Swift. She was in a big oat field and I used a 50 pound sack of feed for a rest on the hood of my truck. Longest attempted shot was 1500 yards (est - too far for the range finder to work) on a yote with a 7 mag. I had it perfectly on line but the round hit about 7 or 8 feet short.

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/10/09 11:11 PM

300yds. 30.06. I believe it was 165 gr. I am not yet confident in my shooting to take a longer shot than that.

175 and 225 pig. Free hand with a group of pigs running straight away from us. Killed the first one, jacked another shell, and killed the second one. I dont know how since they were running straight away, but it happened. Free hand with a .270. Also, at the exact same time, my friend did the exact same thing, but at 150 and 200 yards. The 4 pigs averaged around 175, and all 4 were taken with a .270. We were 11/12 that night spotlighting.

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/11/09 08:20 AM

The furthest for me so far is using an open sight Marlin 308 at about 120 yds on a Texas Dall. Dropped the ram first shot. Not my limit by any means, but just the farthest opportunity I've had.

There's some pansies out there that would only take that with a 15 power scope!

Posted By: TX4Ever

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/11/09 10:59 AM

Furthest kill shot was at just over 375 on a cull buck last year using my 4 wheeler as a rest with my weatherby 270 with a 4-12X40 scope that i keep on 10X, deer dropped right where he was hit. But my furthest shot was on a metal turkey at 853 yeards with about 15 mph winds with my .308 Rem 700 with my straight 10X leuapold M4, what a wind adjustment that was lol sniper school payed off!

How in the world did you do that?

We were on the tactical team for the narco task force back then, and shooting competitively, and shooting nearly every day. We had been going farther and farther back, and had been really successful at 100 yards on steel. The rest was lots of luck, but it was a safe environment, wide open, and rested on the hood of my truck. Thankfully I had redneckmesiah and another friend in the truck watching, or they never would have believed it.

I have hit a couple at 400+ with a rifle, but to me this was a better feat. That Sig has taken hogs, coyotes, and even one deer, as well as saved my butt twice. It's treated with reverance around our house. I have bought two to replace it, but can't put it down. The nice pretty new ones stay in the safe.

I'm gonna get blasted for this......

It was easily 11 yrs ago was hog hunting near Sweetwater bored. Saw a Buzzard gliding wayyy up in the air. My guess 400 plus yards,..My hunting buddy I was with says I bet you couldn't shoot that buzzard.

I had a Rem 7mm mag and I led him about 8 inches and hit him, he spiraled down. He went down so far away we couldn't find him. We hiked at least 2 miles looking for him Afterwards, then the what if's started in....What if I missed, where would the bullet go? Even though we were in the middle of nowhere. Plus the fine for the shooting of the bird.

Still feel bad to this day. It ruined my whole hunt. I don't share this story but I have a witness who can put me in jail.

I remember the FDC, we usually called in the coordinates to the the fire base/LZ or where ever they kept the big toys. I only remember a couple of times we had an Arty officer with us.

FADAC, no idea, either before or after, but guessing after my time. Been a civilian since 1969.

105's are for varmint hunting, we also had 4-175's for the serious bidness. The boy's on the ground never seemed to care which one we sent out just as long as we did it quick!

Re: Personal best...shot - 11/20/09 12:05 PM

Good call and story. Did the 105mm use the short .50 cal spotter round? It is amazing how accurate the big artillery guys get.

The BB with 16 inch gun could put 2200 lbs HE downrange 25 miles. That over the horizon.

We had 5inch 38s. For pratice one time they put out a 100 foot tall weather ballon weighted to stay on surface. After about 20 rounds at 5 miles they gave up and sent out the sniper in a launch to nail it. The fire control guys were not very happy people.

We never used them but I've seen them mounted on the 106 MM M40A1 Recoilless. With the new lazer guided rounds they're getting one shot hits even on moving targets.
