2024 Fawn Crop

Hopefully the recent rains will help produce a good 2024 fawn crop. Our landowner sold his cattle 2 years ago and we have lots of cover for fawns again this year like last year. I don`t think the drought and hot summers hurt the fawns as much as overgrazing everything that is a result of the drought and leaving fewer places for the fawns to hide from predators. I was surprised to see as many fawns last year, but we had early rains that resulted in everything being overgrown with nothing to eat it.

Unfortunately there’s likely going to be a healthy coyote population too.

Did he convert to a wildlife valuation? That would certainly benefit y'all.

No. He just hasn’t replaced his cows yet because he only has one small tank that doesn’t get much runoff. On our 7th season and only had cows for 2 seasons. We have a creek that hold water pretty good but no runoff every couple of months and it’s dry.

No fawns around the house yet, they seem to be a little late this year.

201 days gestation period for whitetail deer. Most should be born later next month based off of the main rut for my area.

I've been working on them since I finished my high fence last May. 17 since June 1st last year. But still more to go.

Same here. Killing them back is just maintenance.

I only killed one last year after numerous sits and only 3 in the past 6 seasons. They just don`t move much during the daylight hours. I hate the guts and liver.

Most of mine were caught in snares.

I have believed this for a while. Our place has been in wildlife exemption since 2007. Have been through a few pretty rough droughts in that time. We have always had tons of coyotes and bobcats and a very strong fawn crop. I believe fawning cover is very important and the reason why.

I've got a couple of whales that should pop pretty soon.
