Who uses a 20 guage for doves and doesn't have to?

Who uses a 20 guage for doves and doesn't have to? - 08/09/09 10:56 PM

Lot's of topics from bored hunters on here lately, patiently awaiting the opener, so here goes another dumb question.

I've always hunted as an adult with a 12 guage, but this year due to a bad shoulder I'm going to revert back to my younger, stronger days, and I'm going to swing a 20 guage for doves.

Just curious who all hunts with a 20 guage for dove, but doesn't have to?

Just because you like it, or other reasons?
Not a poll, but just curiousity.

We few exceptions, I have pretty much always used a 20 for doves. Just like the balance and feel of the lighter gun, and it works just fine.

Doves go down fairly easy, when you hit `em
I quit using the 12ga over 25 yrs ago, as if I am "on", the 20ga does me just fine. If I am having a bad day, a 10ga probably wouldn't help.
I just started also using a 28ga two yrs ago (load my own...factory are big $$$). Even it does the job with minimal, if any, handicap.

I have ? 12's in the safe and 2 20's
With that being said, I have bought, sold and traded 12ga guns, but the 20's stayed with me....
Didn't know what I was missing.....20ga rules, until I get a 28ga
Beretta 20ga Auto and a Browning O/U 20ga

Funny thing, i hunt with a Berreta O/U 20 Ga, my 14 yr old son shoots a 1187 12 Ga. I hunt with the 20 because i like it, not because i have to, havent shot my 12 in the last 5 years.

I shot a 20ga last year for dove season and did great. But I'll go back to a 12ga this year, just feel more comfortable

I have several 12s' and 3 20ga. but I always find myself grabbing the Citori Lightweight 20. I dont know why, but I do. It is so light, it kicks worse than my 12's do with field loads. I shoot the Shur-Shots with 1 oz. of #8. Some of the guys I hunt with a few years ago told me I wasted my money on those. Later in the day, after they fought their 12 Ga. 1100's not cycling those Super Speeds, they found out my 20 Ga loads had 1/8 oz. more shot than those good deals they had. The next weekend, they brought out the AA's.

I exclusively use a 20 gauge O/U for dove. Most of my shots are close (20-25 yards) and the 20 is plenty for that.

I prefer a 20 for doves hands down, and I own several 12's and 20's

I occassionally break out the ol' 20 gauge just to blow the dust out of her, but I still prefer my 12. I need all the powder and pellets I can get.

I have a 16 ga model 12 that I been using...it has a cheekpiece stock and wsa made in 1941. feels like a 20 but hits like a 12...at least to me...but I always do things different.

and it was made in 1941...just a cool gun

I have always used a 12 but I am seriously considering a 20 for this year. The weight reduction is what I like most about the 20s. A 20ga. Benelli M2 weighs 5.8Lbs.

Re: Who uses a 20 guage for doves and doesn't have to? - 08/10/09 04:55 AM

I used a Franchi 20 ga last year that I had bought for Quail and was really pleased with the weight reduction. All 3 of my 12's stayed in the safe.

I figure that I'm not out to impress anyone and frankly using a Mojo I could probably get by throwing rocks.

I got a new LH Beretta White Onxy 20 gauge that I'm going to use for dove this year. Remmington Shurshot Heavy Dove Loads, 1 oz. Hope it works!

Re: Who uses a 20 guage for doves and doesn't have to? - 08/10/09 07:05 AM

I shoot the 12 cuz the weight of the gun doesn't bother me, shells cost the same, so do the guns so I figure go big or go home. Guess I have that "complex" I do get made fun of at the quail lease where it exclusively 20 guages there. I dont get credit for any birds i hit with my "canon" lol.

I bought a Mossberg 500 youth model for my wife and I like to shoot it better than my 12. shooting sonofagun.

we have way to many whitewings where i hunt. 12 with high brass are the only thing that will knock those semi-pigeons out of the sky. When we go north of austin, a 20 would be fine, but i dont have one anymore, so the 12's stay with me.

Hope you have a good recoil pad...The WO o/u will be bumping you with the heavy dove loads.
My Browning 20ga O/U lets me know what I have been doing after about 100 shells.
The Browning is heavier than the Beretta also.

I have both a 12 and 20 and love shooting both of them! But the 20 is a side by side beretta and it is just a blast to hunt with and it swings real smooth!

I have a 20ga benelli cordoba for doves and I love shooting that gun! I'm old school and I never thought I'd own gun a shotgun with a "plastic" stock. I have several 12ga guns & an old 28ga 870 that all have wood stocks. I like to admire the wood on a finely crafted shotgun. But I have to admit the benelli cordoba is one fine machine. The technology built into this gun is amazing. Shooting a box or two of shells to get a 15 bird limit really doesn't do justice to this gun. It begs to be shot all day long! I guess I need to take it to Argentina!!

Guess I'm not going to be alone shooting my 20.

Reminds me when I was a kid, and use to hunt with the old single shot 410, and a 16 gauge.

The old 16 was a dove getter alright!

I bought the Benellei Montefeltro 3 years ago and LOVE IT! I use it dove as well as quail and even took it on a Pheasant hunt and it did great!

Big Fan of the 20!!!

I will probably shoot both this year, but I'm starting out with my Beretta O/U opening day. The best shooter out of our group shoots a 28 ga. and out shoots us all.

Re: Who uses a 20 guage for doves and doesn't have to? - 08/15/09 12:42 PM

A few years back, about 5 if I remember, we were catering a dove hunt and what I call a "City Boy" pulled up in a Lexus sedan and asked me if I had some extra shells he could buy. I asked him what gauge, and he replied 12 or 20, but I prefer 20. I gave him a box, and said "no charge have fun", and he insisted I keep his ten dollar bill. We watched him walk off in his shorts and tennis shoes through the mesquites and prickly pears and we kinda snickered at him. Less than an hour and a half later he walks up, with a Wal-Mart sack full of birds, thanked me for the shells and handed me back the ones he did not shoot. That guy had his limit, and when I counted the leftover shells, he did not have one miss! This post kinda reminded me of that experience.

I use 20 and 410...can shoot more and have less shouldar problems. Others in our group use 12's, I give them a hard time, about using a 12 gauge to make up for thier lack of accuracy....LOL

I love a 20. I am a big sissy and don't like the recoil, besides, shotgunning messes up my rifle shooting.

10,12,16,20 gauge. I havent found any of them to work very well for me if you get what im saying. In front of my gun is the safest place for a dove to be.

I have a related question. I have been considering a 20 guage for a few years now to carry something a little light a lighter kicking. I currently hunt with a 12 ga Citori and I shoot it fairly well and love this gun. I used a friend's 20 ga Benalli Legacy last year to try it out and it knocked the stuffing out of my shoulder. At least much more than I was expecting. Is this because this is a light gun or is there really no difference in the kick of a 12 or 20 ga?

The benelli autos are going to kick more than gas autos (like beretta or browning). I have the benelli cordoba 20ga which has some recoil reduction technology built into the stock (which the benelli legacy does not have). With normal 7/8oz dove loads, the cordoba has very little felt recoil. I could shoot it all day long.

I agree. I've got an old 870 wingmaster 28ga with a skeet barrel. It's a sweet shotgun that works great on doves. I should use it more but I've gotten spoiled shooting autos.

I like my 20's for dove. mostly the Benelli. Have some 12's but have not used them n doves in a while. Like the lighter kick of teh 20's and kill percentage is just as good so why get kicked more than have to?

Depends on the set up and flight for me. I love to sit down under a Mesquite next to a pond and shoot a 1100 light weight 20. If I am out in a grain field and have longer shots I'll shoot an A5 light 12. Talking about a differnce in recoil! I only shoot Remington Heavy Dove loads.
