It's Black Walnut...increasingly a tree you don't often see...owing to its commercial value.

At one time....so common, you would never had to have asked.

And you need a sledgehammer to break open the nut.

And you are going to get green stain all over your hands. I had several at my last place and never
once did I see a deer eat or try to eat one.

Stain quickly turns brown and is nearly impossible to remove. Deer can't crack a walnut, not even close but Feral Hogs can.

Take a whiff of it. If it smells like Kyle, it is a fruit. If the aroma smells like Texas Dan, it is a nut.

If that tree dies make sure to save as much wood as possible. Last time I bought some walnut wood it was running about $7.50 a board foot.

I have a single Black Walnut on my property. Probably about 80 years old. Has a couple of large 'burls' on it. Had a guy stop and offer $3,000.00 for it. I declined.

yep. black walnut ... I have dozens on my place in central TX from young to 3-4 foot diameter at the base. I have yet to get an edible nut off any of them, just a rock hard shell with minimal meat

Grew up in Wisconsin, walnut was everywhere. Had an old neighbor that would jack up his Ford pickup and put it in granny gear and start feeding walnuts between the tire and the hard ground to schuck them. And yes they stain your hands for looong time.

Old corn sheller shucks the shells very well, then cracking them is another issue. Just need a trained squirrel to break them open for you but not eat them
