Mini Chainsaw

Anyone tried one of these for trimming small limbs around your stand? Wife got one for small stuff at home and it works pretty good on stuff up to about 5 inches. It's pretty quiet also so I will probably "borrow" it in a month or so. She found it on Amazon if interested.

I inherited one of the Stihl battery operated chainsaws and it works great.

I'd imagine it would work pretty good.
The only thing I'd question is the run time of 2.5-3 hours they are claiming because if it truly has a 550w motor it would mean it is pulling about 26a of power from a 21v battery.

how complex do you have to make nippers?

I'll bet you lunch those batteries are crap. These work just as good if not better and never go dead.

That is too be seen. She has only used it about four times but no problems so far.

If I can't lop it, I'll pull out the Echo stick saw or the new Stihl 362C-M.

I am not sure a mini chainsaw has a place in my kit. I either use these lightweight loppers

or I use a pole saw. I think loppers will cover most of what the mini chainsaws are meant to cut.

However, gotta love power tools, right? I am sure a mini chainsaw has its uses.

Better off with a pruning saw and bow saw.

I've done a lot with just a pruning saw.

Most of the time what I need to cut is above head height considerably....so I use my pole saw, but its handy for limbs lower than that too.

I have the luxury of planning ahead what to cut....since I mostly hunt my own property, but I can see where a small portable saw of some type might come in handy.

I'll use whatever it takes, machete, lopping shears, saw, brush cutter...etc It's a never ending battle in East Texas to keep the brush cut back, shooting lanes open...and all.

I bought the milwaukee 18v cordless weedeater and pole saw and couldn't be more happy. That little pole saw is a bad little dude for mesquite limbs up to about 4" or even a bit bigger.

My next purchase will be a lightweight small pruning chainsaw but damn they are expensive. I am leaning to echo because I've about given up on the newer Stihl products. I've had a high dollar weedeater and bigger chainsaw crap out after very, very little use!

I got one just for the heck of it to use during turkey season. It worked great cutting brush out of the road etc. Very quiet so it didn't spook the birds and have used it a lot around the house since them. Beats using pruners on the bigger stuff and the battery does have pretty long work life.

Those little saws are great! Easy to climb all over the tree, light. Cuts 5” limbs.

At the beginning of summer, I had to have a big 50' pine tree taken down in the yard. The tree service guy had one of the mini Stihl 36V saws hanging on his belt. He climbed up, went around that tree like a monkey, and cleaned every branch off in about 10-15 minutes. It never even slowed down, and the tree was as clean as a stripper's pole when he was done. Said it's the best tool in their truck!!!

Looks like lots of different stihl 36v out there. Which specific model is it?

FR: I remember he said it only weighed less than 10# and was easy to use with one hand. Had a 12" bar, so I looked at the web site and I think it must have been a 140 model. They had several and extra batteries. Their chipper had electrical outlet on it, and they said they could charge batteries if needed.

As I get older I continue evaluating things I know I can do myself, over the true cost of buying something I need, aches and pains, and medical expense, and the extra days it will take me to get it done. They showed up with three guys, limbed the entire tree, dropped it in a 10' gap between my house, shop, and wife's garden. Blocked the trunk into firewood size and carried away, ground all the limbs and debris, brought in the stump grinder and it totally disappeared, raked the yard and left 5 hours later. The boss came by, and inspected. He had asked for $1000, but gave me a $100 discount for cash. Brains vs brawn.

Hud, some of us do more nipping than others I guess. And some of us that spend a LOTTA time cutting want to make it as easy as possible. Work smart, not hard. I have every lopper and machete known to man, along with a echo pole saw(awesome) and the smallest echo gas saw(2511 I think and its awesome). Also, I have the Echo PAS attachment series that has various blades that cut various size things. Ask me about which one cuts what. I just now bought the most aggressive wood cutting blade for those attachments but had to get the Stihl version which fit it. That blade cuts like a chainsaw or better. Incredible. Like having a chainsaw that you dont have to bend over to cut stuff at ground level. Looks a lot like the one at top of flintnappers pic.
Having said all that, I think I still have a need(want) for the mini chainsaw the OP talked about. I have all the Ryobi 18v series attachments so I tried their 18v chainsaw. About the only time Ive ever returned anything. Must of been defective cause it just bounced off the limbs instead of cutting. I want this mini saw to just sit on my truck seat and grab real quick and easy and run everytime without having to grab and crank a gas chainsaw or climb up a tree with anything cumbersome(like loppers). Its hard to hang onto a limb with one hand and use loppers with just the one other hand.
Hud, outside of South Tx there are actually trees that are big enough to climb.

Indeed there are. Had one blow down not long ago that I had to cut up. Didn't have to climb it....but a lot of work just the same.

That’s not the kind of stuff I gear up for. Way too big for my wheel house.

I use one of these for where the loppers won't reach. Works like a champ and pretty good battery life too.

i own both the 36 volt makita chain saw and the blower, they howled when i showed up with that saw now 3 of the 4 howlers own one,i use the blower daily no more brooms

These two are great for small jobs

The battery life? I typically don’t have to change batteries before the job is completed
