First kill with the 1976 Ruger

Dang! I was gonna post this on Mr. Ed's thread, but it got locked!

I shot a nursing mother:



...with the rifle I bought my wife several years ago. She's cross-eye dominant (the wife, not the pig), doesn't take instruction from her husband well at all, and, decided she's not a hunter. ('Missed 2 different, decent Grapetown 8's on two different weekends, but I'm airing dirty laundry and...I digress.)

Anywho, it's sat at the back of the safe for years. I finally realized I need to use it and realized how pretty it is, for a "budget" rifle of the times.

Love those old tang safety Rugers! I had one in 338 Win Mag but sold it to another forum member. It’s the only rifle I have ever sold because it beat the ever living crap out of me. I have shot plenty of guns bigger than 338 but something about that one just stomped the crap out of me. I noticed he sold that same gun a year or so ago.

I will have another one some day.

Oh, most definitely sniping. And proud of it. 'Found yet another Grendel casing in THAT blind. That sneaky devil gets around.

I have a Ruger like that in 308. Got 3 deer with it this year. I have got a bunch of deer with it since I bought it used it about 20 years ago. Can't see any reason to buy another deer gun. One of my sons has already laid claim to it when I'm gone. It's the gun he grew up shooting. He got several deer with it when he was younger.

In 1997 I wanted a Remington 700 BDL but got a Ruger M77 because it was $30 cheaper.

For once, cheaping out paid off As I love that rifle.

I have two of the old tang safety model 77s. One in the 7x57 and the other in a 280 remington. Those two guns plus the newer Hawkeye in a 7-08, will all be
in the gun safe when I'm gone. You just cannot beat the old Rugers.

Muzzle break
Aftermarket stock, mine is a B&C
Limbsaver pad
Trigger Job down to 3 lbs.
It's my Elk gun and no tracking is needed once trigger is pulled.

I have a Bicentennial Ruger in .250 Savage. It was gifted to me from a gentleman that was like a second Dad to my Dad. It has an old Redfield Widefield 3-9x on it. Shoots like an absolute laser beam. My favorite thing is earholing pigs with it.

I have one like yours but in 270, fine shooter but seems to rarely get hunted.

A dead pig is a good pig. I bought a 1976 Ruger .270 in 1976. Finally shot the barrel out a couple of years ago, great rifles.

I've got a few of the old tang safety Rugers and break one out from time to time, still have the first one I ever bought. Out of the box they were a good inch and half rifle, bed and float and they'd easily shoot around an inch. Their triggers were not the best and hard to adjust but it could be done. One of my 7-mags has the factory trigger and the other has an old Timney, local gunsmith worked the factory trigger and you can't tell much difference between them. With a good trigger those old rifles could shoot could shoot under an inch easy. In my opinion they were the best rifle on the market at the time and I guess I wasn't the only one thought that, they sure put a dent in Remington and Winchesters sales. They are a meat and potato's rifle, rock solid and built to last several generations. They were using Douglas barrels for quite some time and Douglas was about as good as you could get at the time. All but one of mine is either Flat Bolt or Hollow bolt and I wouldn't take for any of them. The longest shot I ever made on a deer was with my old Hollow bolt 7-mag with the factory trigger, around 450 yards on a Mulie buck down by Rankin TX. My biggest Mulie was also taken with the same rifle. Bill Ruger claimed it to be the working mans rifle and he didn't let them down.

Compared to the crap manufactures are putting out today they are damn near heirloom pieces.


we got increased accuracy that no one really needed in exchange for cheap plastic stocks and cheap wood, poor fit and finish and ugly as sin designs.
