Bucket List

Bucket List - 12/01/20 02:52 PM

Whats on yours to hunt

Mine is short, controlled by getting older and being retired, not wealthy.

1. Nilgai Bull
2. Aoudad with beautiful, long coat
3. Pronghorn over 15"
4. Elk, this ones a stretch but you never know. It will be a very expensive hunt, guided on private land. Got to be pretty much a guarantee cuz, I can go hiking here.

Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 03:30 PM

Got a nice pronghorn in WY this year, which was my first venture outside of Texas for hunting. I whiffed on a bunch of other tries at tags, but I'm starting to get active in buying points in states where you can do that.

realistic within the next few years:
nice mule deer
elk

kinda pipe dreaming:
caribou
moose

really pipe dreaming:
goat or sheep hunt

Fortunately, I'm starting at early middle age, so if I manage to stay healthy I do have a decent runway here...

Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 03:36 PM

In no particular order:

Marco Polo/Argali Sheep - somewhat reasonable elevation and temperature, not interested in not being able to breath and freezing to death at the same time

Dall Sheep

190" Muley, but I'd be very happy with a 180" buck. Would really like it to be a big, fat Rocky Mountain Muley

Mid Asian Ibex

Rocky Mountain Bighorn

Free range bull bison, Need to draw my Wyoming tag.

I have my B&C bighorn sheep, a mt lion, cow bison, bull elk, B&C pronghorn, nice mule deer and nice whitetail.

Buzzsaw I know some ranches in general areas in Wyoming that could get you on a nice bull elk for a reasonable price, well less than $10,000 for sure. No guarantees but very high success rates.

Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 05:14 PM

Oh gosh! Where to start? Still so many species I would love to hunt. If I had the money, the time and provided the animals could ethically and legally be hunted on a sustainable utilisation basis, I don't know if there would be any I would exclude. Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 05:21 PM

I want to chase mountain lions with dogs and go on some bird hunts that I haven’t made yet. Other than that I don’t have any other hunts I would be that fired up about that aren’t yearly occurrences.

Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 09:01 PM

I’d sure like to do some quail hunting next year. And it might sound a bit odd, but I want to eventually kill a 12 point on this place (low fence and all paid for). I’ve been looking at pictures from 8 and 10 years ago, and the racks are considerably better now than they were then. So, I’m apparently heading in the right direction with my approach to letting the best herd bull buck live.

Re: Bucket List - 12/01/20 09:14 PM

Good question, Buzz. There's animals that I'd be interested in taking but, like you, age is starting to be a factor.

1. Nilgai. I actually made a run down to the King four years ago, but didn't pull the trigger.

2. Aoudad. Such a handsome animal and often in some really beautiful country.

3. Desert Mule Deer. I'll make this happen as soon as Mexico gets the drug cartels under control. I'm holding my breath...

4. Cape Buffalo. I want to see Africa one more time before I kick and I figure I've got one more buffalo left in me!

Re: Bucket List - 12/02/20 04:51 PM

Categorized and listed alphabetically:

Complete
* Deer - Whitetail (but want a good one to mount)
* Dog - Coyote (but want one to mount)
* Misc - Pig (but want one to mount)

Scheduled
* Sheep - Aoudad

Planning
* Bear - Black
* Deer - Elk

Researching
* Cat - Mountain Lion
* Deer - Mule
* Dog - Wolf
* Sheep - Dall

Basically as I complete animals above then animals from below move to Researching > Planning > Scheduled. Realistically, I doubt I'll cross many off the list.

* Antelope - Blackbuck
* Antelope - Gemsbok
* Antelope - Kudu
* Antelope - Scimitar Horned Oryx
* Cat - Bobcat
* Cat - Lynx
* Deer - Axis
* Deer - Moose
* Goat - Ibex
* Goat - Markhor
* Goat - Mountain
* Misc - Buffalo
* Misc - Zebra
* Sheep - Bighorn
* Sheep - Mouflon

Lowest priority
* Sheep - Texas Dall/Corsican/Black Hawaiian/Painted Desert (*IF* I make it to this point I'll likely only pick one)

I guess with exception to Texas Dall/Corsican/Black Hawaiian/Painted Desert all will be free range, ideally DIY on public land. Where necessary or smart I'll make exceptions. For example, I'm working out the details of a DIY, solo, spot-and-stalk, backpack hunt on public land for Black Bear in Idaho. The Elk hunt is in Wyoming and has an A and B plan. A is with a WY resident family member fulfilling the resident guide requirement for wilderness access; B would be solo so no wilderness access.

Why a pipe dream? There are OTC opportunities. Not saying they're cheap or high success - just don't have to draw.

I don’t care about size, I care about days a field

I want to be able to consistently hit the 120 days a field mark. With 50 of those chasing bugling bulls in a multiple of states.

Outside of the unlimited areas in Montana, I don't think there are any other OTC units for either one of these. The unlimited areas are definitely not for the faint of heart, even by sheep hunting standards.

There are a lot of guided OTC In Alaska. If you Canadian lot of OTC options also.

Unlimited arent that bad, just a lot of country waiting for a sheep migration.

Idaho has some pretty good draw odds in church etc that are probably more physical demanding then some of the Unlimited Units... but have more sheep.

If I was a sheep guy, I’d hunt unlimited when ever I could.

There are only like 150 animals left in their native habitat. Would be an exhilarating poaching expedition in Sahara

Current #1 = killing a bull elk with my bow during the rut. (2021 hunt) Tired of eating tag soup!
#2 is either dall or stone sheep hunt (probably 2023 hunt when I'm done with my Masters as a reward as long as a maintain a 4.0)
#3 is Red Stag in New Zealand. (have a friend that lives there that's offered to host me. I just need to stop saying next year and do it)

I have not hunted with these folks personally, but know a couple guys that have. They had a great hunt, and the facilities were nice enough that they took their wives.

Re: Bucket List - 12/04/20 03:15 PM

Outside of what I have available to me on family and friend owned property, I have not hunted anything, so my list is pretty boring I guess...

1. Pronghorn
2. Elk
3. Prairie Dog

Once I have those three down, I might add some more.

Re: Bucket List - 12/06/20 08:42 PM

Make it to the next season to hunt with family would be my goal. I have hunted Canada and many ranches in Texas so l have had my fun. An annual dove hunting spot would be most enjoyable. Don't need much, just an annual meat supply.
