For public land

All age requirements are at the time your application is submitted.
Applicants must be at least 8 years old.
Applicants under 17 years old must apply with a supervising adult that is at least 18 years old.
Applicants that are exactly 17 years old may apply alone or as a group member but may not be a supervising adult for a youth applicant.
Applicants 17 years old are considered adults.
Guided Hunt Packages are restricted to Adults Only.

Is that link correct? It says you have to take and pass hunters ed before you can buy a license and that the minimum to take hunters ed is 9 years old. I dont think that is the case, and if it is when did it change? You used to be able to buy a deferment for hunters ed for a year.

Yeah. Its a mess. The other info is for public draw hunts that require hunter's ed and says you have to be at least 8.

If you pull the trigger on any game animal in Texas you need a license.

Yes. I think people get confused because if you're under 17 you don't need a fishing license.

I would add too that getting that hunting license is a cool thing for the kid, so even if they didn't legally need it it's worth the $7

I fully understand they need a license and will buy one. That’s not the question. My question is can my 6 & 8 year old grandsons hunt as long as they have a license?

Texas
Under 9 years of age you must accompanied with a person who is at least 17 and is licensed to hunt in Texas
9-16 you can hunt alone if you pass the hunter education course

Any child can get a hunting license even if that child is only 1 year old. However, you had better convince the game warden that he/she is capable of shooting a gun or bow or whatever means to hunt. If the child is under 17 years of age AND HAS NOT taken the mandatory hunters education course then that child must be accompanied by an adult. This adult MUST ALSO have a license AND/OR have taken the mandatory hunters education course. This is for private land hunting only.
If the child is hunting on public land then that child must be at least 9 years old to take the mandatory hunters education course or be accompanied by an adult who has a hunting license.

Thanks for the information. I was a little confused by the age requirement of 9. Both grandsons have been practicing and are ready to take their first turkeys. They’ll be hunting with the Stevens 410 dedicated turkey gun and Federal TSS ammo.

Does a youth hunter accompanied by a licensed adult have to buy a federal duck stamp to hunt waterfowl?

Waterfowl hunters 16 years of age or older are required to have one.

When my daughter and I hunted prior to her 16th I used to buy her the Federal "junior duck stamp" for like $5 at the same time I got mine just for fun.

All of the other age related state game laws still apply.

Re: Hunting license for children - 11/19/20 09:05 PM

Youth can take their Hunters Education Class as early as 9 but aren't required to take it until they are 18 or unable to hunt with a youth license. The can hunt with an adult at any age as long as both have a valid hunting license and the adult has taken the HE if required to do so.
