No hogs

No hogs - 11/03/20 10:07 PM

I know most of the hunters across the state have to deal with hogs. What I want to know is, who doesn’t have hogs and what area are you hunting.

We have 660 acres in Concho county, and we have never seen a hog on it in 13 years. I guess we are in a sweet spot between the Concho river and the live oaks about 6 miles south of us.

My uncles brother has a lease in Water Valley and says that they haven't had any hogs since they've been on the property.

We did not have many hogs on our place (Stephens County) for many years. We might shoot a few in a season. This year we are covered in them. We've already killed at least 10 or more. I think it just depends on your location and the time of the season.

Runnels county between Ballinger and Miles, north of HWY67, no hogs on our place, but to the east of us we see the hogs several times a season.

We hunt between Winters and Ballinger and we're covered with them. I see at least five everytime I'm hunting.

Re: No hogs - 11/04/20 07:24 PM

I guess they move around for different reasons. A couple of years ago, my lease suddenly went from lots of hogs to zero hogs. Now we're covered up again.

Re: No hogs - 11/04/20 07:49 PM

They move around a lot, either to find a better food source or to prevent being a food source. My experience has been that once you start shooting them, they move on for a while. If your neighboring counties/towns have them, you will have them soon.

That ^ ^ ^ is a TRUE BLESSING and A GIFT FROM GOD.
I'd literally fall on the ground and give thanks.

Sincerely. Not kidding at all.
Having to deal with hogs is like having
rats run across the dining room table while
you're eating supper

We've owned our place in southern Brown County for just shy of 6 years. First 4 years, every once in awhile a hog or two would show up on cameras, but only occasionally. Two years ago we started seeing signs of rooting, so I set out a few traps. Trapped 4 boars over a few months, and then nothing until about a month ago. Bingo...covered. Will be applying maximum pressure with hopes they move on, but reports from neighbors are the same - seeing multiples on every camera and every hunt. I do not care if it ruins our deer hunting, we will shoot every hog on sight.

We’re covered up in Lee county, not unusual to see 30+ at one time, I will be shooting everyone I have a chance at this weekend. I also have a new green light I will be installing tomorrow for night hunting at one of my feeders. Feel blessed if you don’t have any!

At least 3 bunches on 133 acres. And then the lone boars. I shot a boar last weekend that I looked for a couple of minutes and then went to the house.

We have plenty of hogs on our Jacksboro property. And yes, I feel blessed not to have them in Concho county.

Similar here. From 195x to 2018 we never saw a hog. In 1998 the coyote helicopter got two from a brushy area; in 2007 we caught one in a snare. Other than that, zip/zilch/nada. Opening morning last year I saw two in the pickup headlights while going to the blind. Fellow hunter next door gets 6-8 on game camera. FF to 2020, I've got 12-15 different hogs on camera (including piglets) and am building traps and actively hunting them. 600 acres.

We're covered up. I shot a pretty grey-silver sow yesterday morning. She ran my deer off so she had to pay the toll fee.

Anyone near San Angelo having hog problems, I would love to help you out. Off weekdays so I won't get in the way of your weekend hunts.

Re: No hogs - 11/12/20 03:09 AM

The entire forest floor where I was hunting last year in the SHNF in Walker County was torn up by hogs. This year, the same area shows no sign of hogs at all. I assumed hogs were a permanent fixture of land after they appear in an area, but evidently, I'm wrong. Even so, I was pleasantly surprised the deer in the area didn't have to compete for food with the hogs.

Right now I have more than I've ever seen. This is the year that I was going to get back to planting wheat in a couple of places. Decided there was no point to it.

Taylor County near Drasco, covered up in pigs.

Re: No hogs - 11/12/20 05:42 PM

We are in duval county. We penned 1/2 of our feeders about 3-4 years ago because we were overrun with hogs. Now we seldom get pictures of them much less see them.

Re: No hogs - 11/12/20 05:52 PM

Northern Coke county we are covered up with them. I have seen them about 90% of the time I go hunt now. See them while riding the atv as well. Since 2007 when we had no hogs at all our deer numbers are down probably 60-70%.

Re: No hogs - 11/25/20 06:20 PM

I had a lease near Ballinger for 18 years, the neighbor killed a couple hogs the first two years, then no hogs until the last year. Actually we only saw tracks the last year before I gave up the lease. Now, I hunt in East Texas where we have more hogs than deer. We never pass up a shot on a hog, but we are definitely losing this war.

I hunted on a friends ranch between Brady and Brownwood for 15 years and no hogs there. It was on the San Saba McCullough County line. They cycle on our lease in NW Burnet County. Killed 30+ 3 years ago then few for a couple now we have plenty. I think we have killed 10 this season and I passed on big boar.

Re: No hogs - 11/30/20 06:51 PM

Far northern Mills county - no hogs, yet. It’s rocky sheep/goat country. The hogs aren’t far away though.

Western Hamilton county - covered up in pigs until deer season started. Now they vanished. I don’t understand how fast they can “cycle” or “migrate” on or off a property in such large quantities.

You'll regret letting that pig walk.

We hunted 3-4 days solid over the thanksgiving holidays, zero pictures of hogs, zero sightings of hogs, haven't even seen any rooting. Talked to the hunters across the county road from us and they say they are covered up in hogs.

Re: No hogs - 12/01/20 12:51 PM

Late summer early fall I was covered up with them in East Texas. As guns start going off, they chose up sides and left. I have one bunch of really small piglets show up at one of my feeders middle of the night about once a week.

I'm sure after season and I plant my spring early summer food plots they will come in and root it up like they have before.

I took this picture in late October(Erath county) from my deer blind and probably saw 50-60 in 5-6 different groups. We were getting mostly hog pictures at feeder with deer in background. I started hunting/killing hogs every time I seen one. My camera had over 1000 pictures a week ago (7 day period) and less than 10 hog pics. Throwing lead at them helps a lot. We have no access to our lease after deer season and not until almost September, and the land owner come down very little since he has no livestock on it and lives about 50 miles away. They take over and become very bold with no human presence. I even killed a pig at my feeder on opening morning and shooting every hog I have seen has probably hurt my deer hunting, but so be it. If your not part of the solution , your part of the problem. My season has become more about killing hogs this year and less about killing a nice buck. My wife even asks me if I killed a pig when I get home instead of did I get a deer.

Re: No hogs - 12/01/20 02:34 PM

I hunt a lease in Comal county that has yet to have any. Seen two in 3 years. To be honest I kind of missed having a hog to shoot at every now and then.

It took us 25 years but we finally got rid of all the hogs at the ranch in South Texas but we did it. Same story, kind of missed them.

Wife killed a big sow Saturday in Mountain home and it felt good to skin a pig again.

I don’t want to be overrun with them but a few every now and then is welcome target practice

We are in the very SW corner of Concho. Got a hog on camera 6 years ago (only 1 picture)...never saw it again. Got a group on camera this year in a few pictures and a member saw them one night and took some shots at them...blood but no recovery. Have not seen them on camera or in person since. I've seen them on Ft. McKavett road and on the county roads a few times in all my years, but thankfully not many.

Agree it might be nice to have some to shoot at every now and then, but overall think I'd rather not deal with them at all.

Re: No hogs - 12/02/20 05:05 AM

I’m in Runnels county about five miles south of Ballinger on 1100 acres and for the nine years I have been on the lease we have only had them on camera a couple of times and take maybe five. This year I have had a sounder of 20 on camera at one time and another stand has had them at all time of the day. As I was head to the stand on Sunday I came across two on the county rd and they got away before I realized what they were and could get out. Then I checked my cards when I got home and I had two outside the feeder pen at 6:00 when it was still to dark to see. I’m looking for hog lights now!

far ne fannin county, I live in a target rich environment. grin 8 feeders out now, 5 blinds on 8' stands and one on 12'.
sort of like the old pong game, shoot them out of one blind one night and head to the other end of the property the next.
have even shot a few off the patio.
