Linden Tx - 10/08/20 08:46 PM

Howdy everyone new to this page but i wanted some information if I can. Now normally I hunt Hill Country and West Texas but some buddies and me found place outside of Linden, Tx so we figured give it a shot. Has anybody hunted this area or even just Cass County period? Just want some tips or stories if you got them. May not be permanent for us and possibly just single season but might as well make best go at it for the price we paid.

It has some decent coverage and a creek running through it which is a plus in my book. I'm not expecting monsters but what are thing to try ands avoid in this area such as stand hunt or blind, feeders or just bait?

Drive around the property and check out the neighbors. They'll probably be hunting it when you're gone. Don't leave 4 wheelers or anything you can't live without at the lease. Don't mean to be a "Debbie downer". Just the way it is.

Welcome ! My wifes Grandad was the JP of cass county in the 90s and we used to hunt his property, in the 12+ years pf hunting I got one doe. Saw many dogs chasing deer through the property and a few of them didn’t make it home.
The ol boys up there were running dogs for deer and hogs back then , not sure how it is now. An east texas deer feeder is a 2 liter soda bottle filled halfway with corn and tossed on the ground.

I've been hunting near there for over 30 years. I have good neighbors, which helps anywhere to prevent theft, etc. In last 5 years, I have taken three 10 pts, a super 9 pt, and a 13 pt lt last year. Good deer are there, you have to hunt hard, but they are there.

I would put up a feeder. There are some good deer in the county. I would hunt the creek bottom first as most likely that is where the acorns
are going to be. East Texas deer will walk across a pile of corn to get to acorns. White oak especially. I'm several miles from you, just north of Hughes Springs.
but inthe same county. Here's a couple of photos of different bucks on my place. They were taken at different feeders and a food plot.
And if you don't have pen's around your feeders, you are going to have hogs.
Stillhntr was right about your going to see a few dogs, mostly hog dogs.
And welcome to the forum.

Sitting at my desk in Linden right now. Some good deer taken every year from all over the county. Pigs are every where. Save the tail and get the $5 bounty. Check out the feed house across from the Sonic for the contest they have been running for at least 30 years.

They just changed the $5 bounty. They no longer give you $5 for a tail, you must bring in the snout and for each one they will give you a raffle ticket for a drawing of various outdoor stuff.

Welcome and good luck hunting. We used to have some timber company land leased northeast of Hughes Springs. Had a decent amount of deer and hogs and a few turkeys till they clear cut most of it. If possible put in food plots and feeders. Like others said, be ready to fight mosquitos.

Hunt out of Avenger, on Black Cypress creek. All that area around Linden, Hughes Springs Jefferson and Avenger is hunted real hard during deer season. A lot of this land is leased long term by timber companies, then leased by hunting parties. There is good hunting, both deer and hogs. See a lot of young bucks under legal shooting. So much pressure on hunting I wish the rule would change for doe. I feeling is you kill a doe and you are killing a lot of deer for the future. This area is not overrun by doe. I feel that the poaching keeps that down.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It looks about like the typical responses that I was thinking already such as watching the neighbors (Poaching), setting up on the acorns this time of year (I deal with that a lot around Johnson City). Hopefully we dont have to deal with to many people running dogs close but its not a deal breaker I've been on both sides of it. I'm just looking forward to getting back into some East Tx woods, I haven't had place to run out here since early 90's out in Nacogdoches.

If you have people running deer with dogs contact your local game warden as that is no longer legal in Texas. For multiple years after they changed the rules about deer dogs, we couldn't even trail a wounded deer with a dog on a leash. Good luck.

Hey everyone thanks for all the input on this i have one more question on the regs for the season.

I come from counties that dont have the heavy restrictions except for the 13" rule which is most in Texas.

For Cass county though it says 4 deer. 2 bucks with only 1 being 13" or bigger and the other basically being unbranched(spike)? Also 2 does all season with only rifle open November 7-22???

Can you shoot does all season with Bow?

Re: Linden Tx - 10/19/20 04:41 PM

No, There is a doe season in Cass country once the rifle season starts. Normally the first two weeks of the season...... November 7-22. .However, there is a two week muzzle loader season
that follows the end of rifle season. During that time you can shoot two does and your two bucks, if you have not killed your limit yet, with a muzzle loader only, not a bow or regular rifle. After November 22, you are only allowed to shoot bucks the rest of rifle season, which ends on January 3rd this year.

During bow season you can shoot 2 does, they count towards the yearly total. That said you can't take any does during the gun season if you have taken 2 during archery. Click on the link below and the + sign to the right of White Tailed Deer.

Saw a pic of first Cass stud. Young man bow harvest looked like 20" heavy 9. Now details as to which part of the county but I got feelers out.
